Boyd “Rex” Franklin, 85, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026. Born on December 23, 1940, in Seymour, Texas, Rex was the son of Boyd and Dortha Franklin.
A passionate sports car racing enthusiast and skilled race car driver, Rex devoted countless hours to the Central New York Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), where he held various roles, including serving as President. His love for speed and competition extended to NASCAR, where he was an avid fan. Beyond the racetrack, Rex found joy in skiing, reading, and sharing his quick wit with those around him. Known for his sense of humor and his unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand, Rex left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Rex served his country with honor and later participated in the Honor Flight Syracuse Mission 21 in 2024, a deeply meaningful experience that he treasured. Rex retired from Onondaga Laminates and volunteered alongside his wife, Janet, at North Area Meals on Wheels.
On June 27, 1964, Rex married the love of his life, Janet Margaret Murphy at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Mattydale, NY. Rex is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Janet Franklin; his daughter, Kimberly (Gerald) DeRuby; his brother, Ben (Linda) Franklin; his sister, Cindy Phelps; and his treasured grandchildren, Tara Furco (Jayson), Rachel DeRuby, and Jacob DeRuby. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Amani Donze, Alexa Zoll, Asher Jayson, and Cheech. Rex’s extended family and countless friends will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Dortha Franklin; his brother, John Franklin; and his beloved daughter, Tammy Franklin.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the Syracuse VA for the compassionate support and assistance provided during our time of need.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 2pm to 5pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse, NY. A Celebration of Life will take place this summer, where family and friends will gather to honor Rex’s remarkable life.
