Master Sergeant Brandon Michael Schmidt, 40, of North Topsail Island, NC passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2025 in Chicago, IL. Brandon was a proud retired United States Marine, devoted husband, father, son, friend, and all around remarkable individual.
Born in North Canton, OH, Brandon was the beloved son of Cheryl (Bennett) Schmidt and Michael Schmidt. From a young age, Brandon demonstrated an extraordinary drive and commitment to excellence – he simply didn't accept mediocrity. He excelled at all of the passions he pursued, from soccer and bowling to pole vaulting. He graduated from North Canton High School in 2003.
Brandon enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in June 2003, embarking on a distinguished military career marked by honor, courage, and unwavering dedication. He faithfully serviced his country with pride until his retirement on September 30, 2023. Over the course of his service, Brandon completed multiple tours overseas, participated in multiple Operations, and was the recipient of numerous commendations, including many honors and awards. His attention to detail, leadership, and resilience left a lasting impact on all who have served alongside him.
Shortly after his military journey began Brandon met the love of his life, Nicole. What began as young love grew into a devoted partnership full of adventure, laughter, and unconditional love. Brandon's proudest achievement was raising his son, Jordan. Brandon was a devoted husband and a proud father whose love for his family shaped who he was.
Nicole and Brandon shared several business adventures together, and when asked about their current one, she remarked "Centerfire was our second business together. Brandon built the whole bar by hand. Every unique touch. It was my dream and he gave it to me."
Beyond his military accomplishments, Brandon had an enduring love for the skies. Skydiving was more than a thrill – it was a passion that defined his spirit. He found true joy and freedom in the open air, and it was there, among the clouds, that his adventurous heart felt most at home.
Brandon is survived by his loving wife, Nicole, and their son, Jordan; his mother, Cheryl (Bennett) Schmidt; father, Michael Schmidt; as well as countless friends, family, fellow Marines, and skydiving companions who will carry his memory forward with pride and love.
A private funeral service will be held at the discretion of the family, entrusted to Wilmington Funeral and Cremation, 16076 US-17 Hwy N,
Hampstead, NC 28443. Entombment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
To honor Brandon's life, a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 beginning at 5:00 pm at Splash by the Sea, 790 New River Inlet Rd, North Topsail Beach, NC 28460.
