Brenda Carney Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 6, 2025.
Brenda Tenies Carney, known affectionately as Bren, Bren Bren, Birdie, or Aunt B, to her family and friends, passed away on November 1, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. A woman of deep Christian faith, Brenda's beliefs gave her strength and comfort throughout her life, especially during her illness. Born on November 12, 1964, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to Florasteen Carney and James Lee Carney. Brenda's vibrant spirit and unwavering devotion marked the lives of those around her for sixty years. She was the second of five siblings.

Brenda's early years were spent in the town of her birth, where she attended Piscataway Vocational High School. Her academic pursuits were a testament to her intelligence and determination. After continuing her education, Brenda embarked on a successful career with the Internal Revenue Service, where she dedicated several years. Later, she continued her professional journey at Allstate Insurance Company, where she was highly valued for her expertise and work ethic.

Family was the cornerstone of Brenda's life. She is survived by her devoted son, Ryshaun Carney, who will cherish her loving spirit. Brenda was a beloved sister to Joyce Ann Pittman (Hollis) and Ronald Christopher Carney (Nichole). Her role as an Aunt was one she held dear. Brenda will be leaving behind cherished memories with her nephews, Michael Freeman, Malcolm Carney, and Terrell-Christopher Carney; her nieces, Tiara Simmons, Tamiya Reid, and Tachera Reid. Brenda also had the joy of being a Great Aunt to her grandnieces, Michelle "Mimi" Elizabeth Freeman and Madison "Maddie" Elise Freeman, and her grandnephew, Jayce Robinson. Her family circle was further extended with love by her brother-in-law, Andre' Reid, and a host of Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends.

Brenda is predeceased by her Mother, Florasteen Carney; her grandparents, John Currie Sr. and Essie Currie; her sisters, Andrea Denice Reid and Alicia Carney; two aunts, Eddie Mae Mack and Willie Mae Currie; and four uncles, Allen Currie, Sr., John Currie Jr., Anthony Lee Currie, and Deandrew Currie.

Brenda's interests were a reflection of her joyous and spirited personality. She loved spending time with her family above all, creating a warm and welcoming home where laughter and love were always on the menu. Music, particularly R&B and Motown, was a pleasure for Brenda. Friends and family will fondly recall the joyous sounds that often filled her home.

Brenda's life was a tapestry of love, service, and dedication. Her memory will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we say goodbye to Brenda Tenies Carney, we hold tight to the memories and the indelible mark she left on our lives. Those who knew Brenda will remember her as a remarkably spirited, intelligent, and fiercely independent individual. Brenda's presence was a source of comfort and inspiration, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
