Brenda Cunningham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Warren on Feb. 20, 2026.
Brenda Marie Cunningham, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, at the age of 79 in Detroit, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and warm memories. Born on September 24, 1946, in Ashland, KY, she was the cherished daughter of Naomi Cornette and Wilbert Slone.

Brenda lived a life marked by devotion to her family and her beliefs. She was united in marriage to the late Howard Cunningham on December 5th 1980, and was a supportive and loving wife until his passing. Her loving spirit continued to shine brightly as a homemaker, nurturing her children, ensuring they were raised with love and care.

A graduate of nursing school, Brenda began her professional journey as a dedicated medical assistant. Her path shifted focus when she embraced the role of full-time mother, a choice that allowed her to pour her heart into creating a beautiful home for her family. Brenda was a gifted cook and baker, known for her sumptuous meals and delectable treats. Her flower garden was a mirror of her soul, vibrant and nurturing, reflecting the beauty and care she invested in her surroundings.

Active in her Christian faith, Brenda was a devoted member of the Bethel Christian Church for over two decades. Her love for Jesus was evident in her daily life and interactions, always ready with a kind word or a supportive gesture. She enjoyed exploring God's creations, from peaceful walks to road trips along the country lanes or towards the tranquility of the beach, often accompanied by a visit to Belle Isle, where she would indulge in the simplicity and joy of nature. That love and appreciation also included animals with a special fondness for cats.

Among Brenda's pleasures were the visits to cider mills and orchards, a testament to her love for the fruits of the earth and the joy of harvest. She reveled in family gatherings, leaving behind a legacy of recipes and memories cherished by her children, Marilyn (Les) Cunningham, Alicia Veizaga, Richard (Pam) Cunningham, Rachel (Robert Cavacose) Cunningham, and Jennifer (Patrick) Kelly, grandchildren Ashley, Matthew, Kalie, Breea, Mandy, Charlotte, and Eleanor, and great-grandchildren Elijah, Gavin, and Bexley and many nieces and nephews.

Brenda is beloved sister Marcella (Michael) Janette, Naomi Doris, Gary (Kathy) Slone, and James (Maryann) Slone, and is proceeded in death by her siblings Leona Ahsmall, Larry Slone, Bivian Freed, John Slone, Wilberta Knight, Patricia Slone, and Etta Slone. Her caring presence will also be missed by her feline companions, Tabatha and Nelson, as well as those who have passed before, Mickey, Lucky, Missy, and Patches.

A visitation for Brenda will take place Monday, February 23, from 11-2pm, immediately followed by a funeral service, 2pm, at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 28499 Schoenherr Road, Warren.
