Brenda Joyce Slaughter, 91, passed peacefully in her sleep, on Thursday October, 16, 2025.
She was born November 11, 1933 in Winter Park, FL to Fanning and Allie Mae (Paul) Johnson. After marrying her husband Theotis Slaughter Sr. and raising her children, Brenda worked 33 years as a clerk for the United States post office until retirement. Affectionately and widely known as “Grandma”, Brenda would embrace anyone who was in need of God’s love. She attended Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith for 20+ years. Brenda was also a trusted spiritual advisor at New Hope Global Community Church and a member of the Greater Glory Ministries prayer band. In her later years, she enjoyed fellowship with the ladies of her Thursday night bible study and small groups at Eastpointe Church. “But above all things, have fervent love among you. For love shall cover a multitude of sins. 1Pet 4:8” Grandma modeled her entire life around this scripture. Regardless of who you are or what you had done, she wanted you to know that you are still loved.
Brenda was not only a fisher of men. Her favorite pastime was spending her days out on the lake, fishing with her son Carl. All friends were welcome to a hot meal and open arms at Grandma’s house. Cooking was her spiritual ministry as she made everything with a heaping spoonful of love. She was famous for her fish and grits or her pepper steak and rice. Those who knew her will remember her by her warm heart, her gentle spirit and her boundless affection for her family.
Brenda would take pride in saying that her greatest achievement is the family she built out of love. The family matriarch will be deeply missed by her children Sharon Turner, Carl (Stacy) Slaughter and Michelangelo (Jessica) Slaughter; her 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brothers Ben Johnson and Greg Johnson; sisters Janet Bell and Linda Perry and a host of nieces and nephews. Brenda Joyce earned her wings and joined her parents; her children Theotis Slaughter Jr, Deborah Slaughter, Cheryl Slaughter and Demetrius Slaughter; her sisters, Mary Johnson, Rose Johnson and Gloria Hoegh; and her brother Nathaniel Johnson.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 28, 2025 from 11am to 12:30 p.m. at Eastpointe Christian Church 745 N. Waggoner Rd. Blacklick, OH 43004. Funeral services will follow immediately after at Eastpointe Church. Burial will be at Glen Rest Cemetery, 8029 E Main St. Reynoldsburg, OH 43068.
