Brian Knowles Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 27, 2026.
Brian D. Knowles, 79, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Mashpee, Massachusetts. Born on September 25, 1946, in Quincy, Massachusetts, Brian lived a life rooted in hard work, quiet generosity, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. A graduate of Norfolk County Agricultural School, Brian developed a lifelong love of horticulture that remained with him throughout his years. His education not only shaped his interests but also reflected his enduring connection to Cape Cod and Nantucket. Brian's professional life was serving his community as a meat cutter. He worked for many years at Fancy's Market in Osterville, and the Stop & Shop and A&P stores across the South Shore, Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. In addition to his work in grocery stores, Brian spent fall seasons scalloping on Nantucket.

Outside of work, Brian found joy in the outdoors as an avid hunter. His time spent in the outdoors was more than a pastime - it was a reflection of his calm spirit and appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Brian was also a faithful fan of the Cape Cod Baseball team Cotuit Kettlers. He enjoyed many a Cape Cod summer night watching the games and cheering on future MLB players from all around the country.

Brian will be remembered as a caring, gentle and generous man who was always willing to lend a hand. His kind heart and generosity left lasting impressions on those fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by son Justin Mackay and daughter in law Patricia; grandson Myles Elijah; his brother Freeman S. Knowles, Jr and sister-in-law Jane Knowles; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Stephen Susko, and dear friend Terry Mackay Turner. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Freeman S. Knowles, Sr. and Marjorie Knowles; brother Bruce Knowles, sister Marjorie Forte Knowles and sister and brother-in-law Kathryn and Arthur Smith. He was also predeceased by his beloved Catherine Consigli.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Brian's life will be held Saturday March 21, 2026 at 11:30AM at Corpus Christi Parish Church, 324 Quaker Meeting House Road, East Sandwich. Interment will follow at Great Neck Woods Cemetery, 251 Great Neck Road, Mashpee. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cotuit Athletic Association, P.O Box 411, Cotuit, MA 02635.
