Negaunee - Brian J. Mattice, age 40, a lifelong resident of Negaunee, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

Brian was born in Marquette on November 23, 1985, to David and Carol (Saari) Mattice. He grew up in Negaunee and graduated with the Negaunee High School Class of 2004, proudly playing on the school's state-champion football team. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan University.

Brian began his career working briefly for Great Lakes Recovery before joining the Michigan Department of Corrections. He served as a corrections officer at the Baraga Correctional Facility for the past 13 years, where he also represented his fellow officers as a union representative with the Michigan Corrections Organization. He took great pride in his work and the people he worked alongside.

Outside of work, Brian lived life with enthusiasm. He was an avid weightlifter, a lover of history, and a loyal supporter of the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, and Michigan football. He enjoyed traveling, spontaneous trips out of town, visiting the casino, and discovering new places to eat. Above all, Brian cherished the adventures he shared with his significant other, Amanda Ecklid, with whom he spent 14 loving years.

Brian was a devoted uncle who was always ready with treats, laughter, and playtime. His nieces and nephews adored him, and he embraced the role of being the "fun uncle."

Brian is survived by his significant other of 14 years, Amanda Ecklid; his parents, Dave and Carol (Saari) Mattice; his siblings, Chris (Krystal) Mattice, Danielle (Tony) Jacobetti, and Amy (Justin) Czenkus; and nine beloved nieces and nephews-Aileena, Emmeric, Calin, Anthony, Isabella, Maci, Noah, Evan, and Amelia. He is also survived by his close cousin, Wade Saari, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a strong circle of friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his aunt, Linda Mattice.

Brian's family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. D. Michael Carriere. A celebration of Brian's life and a meal will take place afterward at the Negaunee Elks Lodge 1116 located at 107 N. Pioneer Ave. Negaunee, MI 49866.
