Brian Newell, my colleague and friend, knew how to do all sorts of stuff. His capabilities, intelligence, enthusiasm and abilities knew no bounds.
This is my favorite picture of Brian. This photo was taken on the first of two days the Cyclorama painting was moved from its longtime home in Grant Park to the Atlanta History Center. This is the roof of the Cyclorama building in Grant Park, just after the crane first hooked on the weight of the first of two massive steel scrolls that held the historic painting.
We'd planned for months for this--and Brian was now fully in charge of an irreplaceable piece of Atlanta's history. Brian is smiling in the photo because he knew that it was entirely **his** show now--and he could, and would, deliver.
Brian had confidence combined with humility--a rare trait, indeed. He was also a good man who did great things. He knew what he knew (which was a lot) and had the tenacity to prove it. This picture, I think, is proof of all of that.
I will miss Brian a lot. All of us here at the Atlanta History Center will, in fact. However, we are comforted to know that his work and his memory will live on here.
We extend our condolences and love to the entire Newell Family. And we thank them--profusely--for sharing Brian with us.
Sincerely,
Jackson McQuigg
