Brian Lee Schafer was born on February 24, 1969, in Kearney, Nebraska, and spent most of his life in Stuart, where he passed away quietly at home. He was discovered on June 2, 2025. All indications suggest that he died quite suddenly and without distress.
Brian was raised in Stuart and graduated from Stuart Public High School. Though he worked a variety of jobs over the years, he often spoke fondly and with great pride about his time at National Farms. He claimed that he learned more there than he did in 4 or 5 or 6 years of high school.
On May 8, 1992, Brian married Marguerite Lee Meusch. Together they had two children: a daughter, Taylor, and later a son, Jordon. These two would become the greatest joys of his life. When Taylor welcomed her own daughter, Lauren (affectionately "Lolo"), Brian proudly added "grampa" to his list of titles, and he rarely missed an opportunity to mention her name.
For some years, Jordon lived right next door, which suited Brian perfectly. Their daily routine included coffee at 10:30, a golf cart ride to the Southside gas station for a pack of smokes and a drink, and if time allowed (and there was always time), a stop by the clinic to visit Dr. Erica and the staff. Most days, Brian preferred the quiet company of his home, but Jordon's visits were always welcome, often punctuated with enough laughter to echo down the block.
Brian had a stubborn heart, a questionable logic, and a deep loyalty to the people he loved. He never needed much, but he gave generously of his time, his stories, and his opinions (especially the unsolicited ones). He had a soft spot for his grandchild, a standing appointment with jibber jabber, a passion for non-sequiturs, and an uncanny ability to know exactly how much groceries cost and how many calories are in each thing.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene (Hoffman) Jauernig; his father, William Schafer; and his beloved stepfather, Arnie Jauernig. He is survived by his brothers, Brant Schafer (Laurie) of Stuart, and Bob Schafer (Deneen) of Stuart; his children, Taylor Schafer and Jordon Schafer; his granddaughter, Lauren Schafer; Nephews and Nieces, and a circle of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances throughout the Village of Stuart, many of whom still owe him a cigarette and others to whom he still owes an apology.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m. at the Stuart Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at the Stuart Community Cemetery, and then lunch back at the church, just how Brian would've wanted it: casual, laid-back, and full of stories. He would've loved to be there himself, as long as the food is easy to chew. Please come as you are. Golf carts and side-by-sides are welcome and encouraged if you have one. This will be the Boogie Buggy Burial. Brian would've insisted you ride in style.
