Amory – Bro. Johnny Hughes, 61, finished his work here on earth where he had the privilege and honor to lead others to Christ. He met his Savior and Lord face to face on Thursday, July 17, 2025. He was born on June 7, 1964, in Waukegan, Illinois, to the late Jackie “Jack” Ray and Annie Sue Crocker Hughes.

He was born in Illinois, but grew up in Northport, Alabama and Amory, Ms. He attended Northside High School where he graduated in 1982. He went on to further his education at Mobile College shortly after he accepted his call to preach. A man of God, his only priority was preaching the gospel to others, leading them to make the most important decision of their lives. Bro. Johnny was an Independent Baptist Preacher since 1983 and his faith and salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ was obvious to anyone who met him. Bro. Johnny was not interested in winning popularity contests or being well known, his only focus was to preach and live out his faith and true devotion daily. He loved everyone and tried to be more like Christ every day. For over 25 years, he served as the Pastor at Victory Baptist Church and he loved his church family through it all. He was a character and liked to say things like “Aint we having a time?” and “Yello” when he answered the phone. His genuine love for God was evident and he was so excited when folks accepted Jesus into their heart.

Bro. Johnny married the love of his life, Sharon Hughes, and together they were blessed with three children and a loving congregation. He was a loving Papa to his grandchildren and he enjoyed having fun and good times with his family. Fellowshipping with his church family was one of his favorite pass times and he loved being in the House of the Lord. In addition to his family, and his fellow church members, he liked to do things with his friend Rickey Robison. He would be “flustrated” if things didn’t go his way at times and he often reminded others “Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer to the end you get the faster it goes”. He enjoyed listening to sermons by fellow preachers and liked to listen to Southern Gospel Music. He also liked to buy and sell items on the side as a hobby.

There is no doubt that Bro. Johnny’s name was on the book of Life and he is at peace with his Savior. He will be missed here on earth yet so many will meet him some day, thanks to the Spirit led life that Bro. Johnny lived.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hughes, Amory; sons, Daniel R. Hughes, Palmer, AK, and Jason Hughes, Amory, MS; daughter, Leah Hughes Vaughan (Brandon), Logan, UT; grandchildren, Wesley, Allison, Laura Vaughan, Ethan, Caleb, and Denver Hughes; brothers, Reggie Hughes (Sharon) and Donald Hughes; sister, Brenda Hickman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Sue Hughes.
