Bruce Cantrell, age 73 passed away on September 4th, 2024. A Vietnam veteran, aquanaut, and lifelong teacher, Bruce was born in Oliver Springs and grew up in Roane County. He graduated from Harriman High School in 1969. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Tennessee Technological University in 1977 and a Masters of Science in Biology from American University in 1985. Bruce enlisted in the Navy and later served as an officer in the Army for fifteen years, where he earned the rank of Major. After being honorably discharged, he taught as a professor of biology and ecology at Roane State Community College for over thirty years. Bruce represented Roane County in the Tennessee House of Representatives during the 99th General Assembly.
Bruce's love of the ocean started during his Navy career. He was a certified master scuba diver with certifications including shark conservation diver and manned underwater laboratory specialist. He earned a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest time living underwater.
Bruce was preceded in death by his father: Hubert Cantrell
His siblings: Gail Mullins, Dennis Cantrell, and Deborah Cantrell.
He is survived by his wife: Denise Cantrell
His children: Charles Cantrell, Sara Zellers, Thomas Cantrell, and Colby Beach
Grandson: Neil Cantrell.
Mother: Margaret Cantrell.
Siblings: Brenda Summers, Rick Cantrell, Randy Cantrell, and Ralph Cantrell.
The family will receive friends Friday September 6, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home in Harriman. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 PM with Dr. Chris Whaley officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday September 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM in Thornton Cemetery in Coalfield with Military Honors provided by Brannon-Kreis American Legion Post 149.
