Bruce Eugene Jorgenson, born July 10, 1931, in Olympia, Washington, passed away on June 14, 2024, at the age of 92. He was a beloved husband, father, and respected member of the community.
Bruce grew up in Olympia and attended Olympia schools, graduating from Olympia High School in 1949. He pursued higher education at the University of Puget Sound on a basketball scholarship, where he excelled both academically and athletically.
Upon graduation, Bruce embarked on a dedicated military career, joining the U.S. Army and serving in Korea. His leadership skills led him to become an artillery officer, and he rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of Colonel. He attended the War College at the Pentagon, earning a Master's degree from Shippensburg College in Carlyle, Pennsylvania. Bruce's commitment to the military spanned 32 years, transitioning from active duty to the Army Reserves.
In 1980, Bruce played a pivotal role as Colonel in charge of the rescue operation following the devastating Mt. St. Helens eruption, showcasing his leadership under challenging circumstances.
Beyond his military career, Bruce was a successful entrepreneur and community leader. He founded and owned KMAS Radio in Shelton for 25 years, leaving a lasting impact on local media. In 1994, Bruce was elected as Mason County PUD 3 Commissioner, a position he held for 28 years until his retirement in 2022. His dedication to public service and his community was unwavering throughout his life.
Bruce married Josie Evans in 1953, later divorcing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Aderson Jorgenson, and is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Lightfoot-Jorgenson, whom he married in 2015. He is also survived by his daughters, Wendi Young of Arizona, Jill Blais of Olympia, Karen Jorgenson of Shelton; and stepchildren, Joe Sloan, Rick Sloan, Janet Grogan, Cynthia Lightfoot, and Grant Lightfoot, all of Olympia.
Bruce had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing with numerous friends who shared his hobbies. His personality and strong sense of duty endeared him to many, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Bruce's life will be held July 10, 2024, 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2109 College St. SE, Lacey, WA 98503. All who knew and loved Bruce are invited to attend and pay their respects.
