Bruce VanVechten Obituary

Bruce VanVechten, 63, of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on February 18, 2026. Born in Rome, NY on February 4, 1963, he was the son of Clarance "Van" VanVechten and DeEtte Higinbotham. Bruce graduated from RFA and he found his passion for working with his hands and tinkering with various machines, engines, and anything that could be taken apart. He was a master mechanic and was employed by Bravos Machine Shop, Burkart Automotive, Jet Sew Corp, Bartell Manufacturing, and lastly MGS Manufacturing. He had a strong work ethic and was a jack of all trades which made him a valued employee. Often fixing things for his friends and family the motto became "If Bruce can't fix it, it's time to buy a new one."
Bruce was happiest at home working in his garage, usually with a Labatt Blue in hand; he always had some projects going on often while enjoying 80's music; The Rolling Stones were a favorite of his. He especially enjoyed muscle cars and vintage Kawasaki Motorcycles; nothing beat their craftsmanship or the roar of an engine for Bruce. Bruce was a free spirit who appreciated the little things in life, he loved animals especially cats, he was an excellent cook and made time to make his favorite meals; he enjoyed his life whether it was music, cars, motorcycles, a friendly critter, or cooking a meal for a friend, he lived his life on his terms.
Bruce is survived by his mother, DeEtte VanVechten of Rome; a brother, Mark (Barbara) VanVechten of Port Byron, NY; his sister, Lauren Marshall of Rome; two nephews, Michael (Gabby) Marshall and Nick Marshall; great-nieces Sophia, Eli, and Lexi; special friends, Mark and Sophie Jennings and Denise Rogers; and also, Brianna, Vincent and Nick Daniello and Tatum Allen who Bruce affectionately referred to as his stepchildren; and his cat, Mia.
He was predeceased by his father, Clarence "Van" VanVechten, and his beloved cat, Cosmo.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at the family's convenience. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Rd. Rome, NY 13440.
Bruce's family would like to thank the entire staff at Hospice and Palliative Care especially Debbie, Christian, Ann, Nick, Irene and Matthew for the wonderful care and compassion which they provided to Bruce. The family would also like to thank Dr. Sikder and his entire staff for their care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413, whose care and compassion for Bruce will not be forgotten.
