Buddy "The Rifleman" Hall, 79 of Metropolis, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at the Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m.
Buddy was born Cecil P. Hall Jr. on May 29, 1945 to Cecil and Helen (Cole) Hall Sr. in Metropolis, IL. He married the love of his life, Sherry in 1967 and spent 47 years doting on her until her passing in 2014. He cherished his loved ones, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. If he wasn't talking pool, he was talking about his family.
Buddy spent his life perfecting his 9-ball game in the pool world. He was a two-time Caesars Tahoe 9-Ball Champion in 1982 and 1984, two-time U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion in 1991 and 1998, the International 9-Ball Classic in 1991 and Challenge of Champions in 1992. He had over 100 tournament victories, over 50 professional titles, was selected as Player of the Year in 1982, 1991, and 1998 as well as Senior Tour Player of the Year in 1998. Buddy was the first of the millennium and 39th ever inductee to the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame in 2000 and inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame in 2011. He was celebrated for his exceptional fundamentals and unmatched cue ball control and was well-known for revolutionizing the pool game by developing the "clock system," a technique for aiming the cue ball. Buddy was a legend that was noted to be one of the greatest the sport has ever produced. What he has done for the sport will continue to live on even through his passing, because as the saying goes, "Legends never die."
Buddy is survived by five children, Jo Dan White, Paula Hall, Jacqueline Dawn, Nathanael Hall III, and Heather; eight grandchildren, Charlie Jo Wheeler, Lucy (Kelsey) Hall, Sherident (John) Sims, McKenzie Wood, Chandler Miller, Jeffrey "Ty" Miller, Tayler Stewart, and Ruby Jean Hall; 18 great grandchildren; one sister, Brenda Rust; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sherry J. Hall; daughters, Bethany Hall, Joyce Ann Hall, and Deanna Pierce; grandson, Lane Wolfe; sisters, Della Berkley and Carol McGowan; brothers, Ray "Possum" Hall, Frank Hall and Alfred Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Loftus-McManus Funeral Homes, Inc. P.O. Box 760, Metropolis, IL 62960 or online on the obituary page to help the family cover funeral expenses.
