Byron Southerland Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones-Wynn Funeral Home and Crematory - Douglas Chapel on Mar. 27, 2026.

Byron Lee “Buck” Southerland, Sr., 82, of Douglasville, GA, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026. He was born on March 12, 1944, the son of the late Lester Thomas Southerland and the late Maelene Southerland.

Buck lived a full and vibrant life marked by his unwavering dedication to both his career and his loved ones.

Buck’s professional journey distinguished him as a top-tier salesman, earning numerous awards that recognized his exceptional skill and commitment. His colleagues remembered him not just for his business acumen but also for the warmth and genuine interest he brought to every interaction. He was truly a conversationalist, someone who could engage with ease and empathy, making lasting impressions on all who had the pleasure of working alongside him.

Outside of his professional achievements, Buck's passions were of a man devoted to joy, adventure, and tradition. He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially devoted to the Atlanta Braves, Georgia Tech, and the Falcons. His ties to Georgia Tech extended beyond fandom; in his youth, Buck earned the endearing nickname "Peanut Boy" by selling peanuts at the Georgia Tech stadium for two to three years—a memory that reflected his early engagement with the community and a lifetime love of sports.

Buck’s love of the outdoors was equally profound. He spent many summers fishing for bass and trout, cherishing the calm and connection found in nature. Camping and fishing trips were a staple of his life, allowing him to share quality time with friends and family alike. Fridays were particularly special, as he embraced his weekly ritual of enjoying golf, carrying forward a pastime that gave him joy and camaraderie.

Known for his ever-present good humor and positive spirit, Buck was "always happy," a testament to his character and outlook on life. His family was the cornerstone of his world, and he consistently demonstrated his devotion to them through his actions and affection.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Harold Southerland.

He is survived by his loving wife of Fifty years, Mattie Southerland; his daughter, Kimberly Langdon; sons, Byron Lee (Carmen) Southerland, Jr., and Scott (Georgia) Southerland; brother, Donald Southerland; eight grandchildren, Josh Langdon, John Southerland, Jesse Southerland, Heaven McClain, Matthew Bazzar, Atalie Southerland, Cheyenne Southerland, and Cassidy Southerland; six great grandchildren, Kayden Langdon, Olivia Southerland, Charlotte Megorden, Calvin Megorden, Princeton Bazzar, and on the way Ford McClain; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 3, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Douglas Chapel.

Interment will follow at Sunrise Gardens of Memories in Douglasville, GA.

Buck leaves behind a legacy defined by kindness, dedication, and a lively spirit that touched all who knew him. His remarkable journey, woven with professional success, sports, heartfelt conversation, and the simple pleasures of life, will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all whose lives he enriched.
