Dr. Otis Byron Ward, Jr.

September 19, 1937 – February 19, 2026

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Otis Byron Ward, Jr. announces his passing on February 19, 2026. Byron was born on September 19, 1937 in Amelia, Virginia to the late Otis Byron Ward, Sr. and Hazel Carter Ward.

Dr. Ward received his undergraduate degree from Duke University, his Master's degree from the University of Richmond, and his doctorate from Tulane University in physiological psychology. He was hired by Villanova University, and spent the next 36 years there as a professor until his retirement. Villanova helped cultivate his respect for the classroom, his collaboration with fellow professors, and devotion to Villanova basketball.

Dr. Ward became a leader in the field of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology traveling throughout the U.S. and the world to conferences as a featured speaker. His work was widely known as important pioneering research in the field. Through his travels, he also expanded his love of golf by taking advantage of access to many top national courses. Dr. Ward was a longtime member of Rolling Green Golf Course in Springfield, PA.

Byron is survived by his two sons, Rick Ward and his wife, Cheryl, of Austin, TX, and Michael Ward and his wife, Mary Jo, of Fredericksburg, VA; his four grandchildren Austin Ward, Sean Ward (Avra), Christina Ward and Emily Davis (Zach); one great-granddaughter Eleanor Davis; his brother-in-law, Claus Richard Lehmann of Boca Raton, FL; his niece Katie Lehmann (Greg); and his nephews Richard Lehmann (Jennifer) and Dr. Andrew Lehmann (Jeanette). He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Dr. Ingeborg L. Ward, who was his soulmate, partner in adventure and fellow Villanova professor, sister Mary "Scootie" Ward, and sister-in-law Sarah Lehmann.

A Celebration of Life for both Dr. Byron Ward and Dr. Inge Ward will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the Amelia Trinity United Methodist Church (9061 Washington St., Amelia, VA). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Otis Byron Ward, Jr. to Mary Washington Hospice, 1340 Central Park Blvd., Suite 102, Fredericksburg, VA, 22401.
