C. Gene Engles, of Red Lion, went to his eternal home on Monday, March 11, 2024 from Wellspan York Hospital at the age of 91. He was the husband of Frances K. (Wierman) Engles to whom he married on March 23, 1967.
Gene was born in Red Lion on June 25, 1932 to the late John W. II and Helen (Anderson) Engles. He graduated from Red Lion High School, class of 1950. Gene was a proud United States Army Veteran, serving in the 79th Engineers Battalion. Upon his honorable discharge, Gene worked as a carpenter for Roman Neff Construction and also dedicated 23 years of service as a history teacher at the former York Vo Tech. He enjoyed his class reunions and looked forward to his weekly telephone conversations with his nephews, Todd Engles and Mike Murphy. His retirement years were dedicated to the Bible Assembly Ministry at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. It was important to him that people around the world have a copy of God's Word and have the chance to trust Jesus as their Savior.
Gene was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Engles and half-brother, Charles Murphy.
There will be a viewing for Gene on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 48 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Brogue, PA 17309 at 10:00 am. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am with Dr. Randy Starr officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Full military rites will be offered by Dallastown American Legion Honor Guard. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Bible Assembly, 48 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Brogue, PA 17309.

Sister Francis, it was a blessing when Bro. Gene came with Bro Randy and Shirley to Mexico to visit. We appreciated and enjoyed staying in your home during the missions conference one year. All are special memories to us. Jack especially enjoyed the opportunity at church to talk with Bro Gene this past fall while we were in the States. We're praying for you at this time. Love in Christ, Jack and Marcia Slaughter.

I had Mr Engles for an 11th grade history class, US Wars Since 1865. It was a class I enjoyed a great deal. He had a reputation among the student body as a tough disciplinarian. Personally, I found him to be strict, but also quite fair.

Every Wednesday was Quiz Day. Every Friday was Test Day. On Thursdays the class would review our quiz results, and on Mondays we´d go over Friday´s test. Mr Engles encouraged students to question anything that was marked wrong. On numerous occasions he would reverse himself and give me credit if I interpreted a question differently than he had intended. It didn´t take long before other students in my class began asking me to present their point of view to Mr Engles. While I´m certain I lost far more of those "challenges" than I won, I do know for certain we both enjoyed the mini debates.

I also remember him as having a pretty good sense of humor. That was something he never got enough credit for from most students.

Thank you Mr Engles for the lessons you taught me, both those from our textbooks and those that helped me grow personally.

I met Mr. Engles at Red Lion Bible Church when he was a Sunday School teacher. I really enjoyed his calm demeanor and he kept everyone's interest in the Bible stories. When I went to Vo- Tech I had him as a teacher.
