Caleb Stuart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parker Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. on Aug. 16, 2024.
Caleb Matthew Stuart passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2024. He was 22.
Caleb was born to Matt and Dana Stuart in Aurora, Colorado, on August 30, 2001. From the beginning, he was the perfect baby – and, privately, his parents often congratulated themselves for being the perfect parents to such a perfect baby. Then Caleb's brother came along in 2004. Together Josh and Caleb, who were almost exact opposites, shattered their perception of perfection and led them on a wild ride for the next 20 years.
When Caleb was younger, he was a people pleaser with a big heart. You just had to say, "I'm a little disappointed" and he would absolutely crumble. But before elementary school ended, he started to exhibit some independence. It all started one day when he declared that he was going to be a Green Bay Packers fan. Since Matt is a life-long Detroit Lions fan, this was tough for him to hear. But it was assumed this would be a passing phase.
It wasn't. Matt remembers waking Caleb on a Sunday morning when the Packers were playing the Lions. Matt said, "Oh no. It looks like Aaron Rodgers has the flu and may not play today." Caleb's response: "I hope all the Lions players were murdered in their sleep."
So there was still some work to do to perfect the dry sense of humor Caleb would master later on.
As part of exhibiting his independence, Caleb began to focus in on the things he really enjoyed – not just the things Matt and Dana thought he should try. He was very involved in the church (he dedicated his life to Christ at a young age); soccer (which he had played since he was four); scouts (he became an Eagle Scout in 2019); and acting. He loved to make people laugh.
Caleb got involved in the Legend High School Theater Department as a freshman, and he performed in several plays during the next four years. It became such a passion that he decided to pursue a Performing Arts degree at the University of Colorado.
Like many college freshmen, Caleb had a rough first semester. Matt and Caleb met for breakfast in Boulder after that semester – late in 2019 – and Matt said, "I'm a little disappointed." (Caleb later referred to this as the "Come to Jesus" meeting, but Matt remembers it more as an honest conversation about what Caleb wanted to do the rest of his college career.) He said that things would be different the next semester.
And they were, in ways that could never have been expected. In March 2020, Caleb was forced to come home because of the Covid Pandemic. Instead of the independence he was enjoying in Boulder, he was back home again, under one roof with his parents and little brother, not able to do much outside the house.
This is when Caleb really began to transform. He started walking 10 miles a day, probably just to get away from the rest of the family, and he eventually lost 50 pounds. He also rededicated himself to his studies. Covid taught us all not to take anything for granted, and Caleb learned that lesson well.
Caleb went on to graduate from the University of Colorado in four years with a double major in Performing Arts and Psychology. After graduating in 2023, he moved to Thornton, Colorado, for a year. This is where he really took off, performing in several plays and often working three jobs at a time to save money. His goal was to move to California when his lease expired at the end of August 2024. He had saved up enough to cover expenses for a year, even if he didn't find an acting job during that time. He wanted to give it a try, and he always said that he would have regrets if he didn't.
Before he died, Caleb was so excited about the move. Matt and Dana saw him last on July 30, 2024, and it was palpable how ready he was to pursue his passion. He talked a lot about apartments he had found online, and the three of them were making plans to help him move at the end of the month. In fact, the last text his mom sent to Caleb included a couple of apartment listings she thought he might be interested in.
It's easy to talk about "what might have been" but instead the family is focused on all that Caleb was able to do – and everyone he was able to impact – in such a short time. He was an amazing young man.
In addition to being survived by his parents, Matt and Dana, Caleb is survived by his brother (and best friend), Josh; his grandparents on his mother's side, George and Lynn Baisley; his grandmother on his father's side, Carol Stuart; his Aunt Margo and Uncle Scott (and Uncle Ken); and his cousins, Dominic, Jackson, and Layla.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Legend High School's Theater Department in Caleb's memory. Checks can be made out to "Legend Theater" with "In Memory of Caleb Stuart" on the memo line and can be mailed to Legend High School, 22219 Hilltop Rd, Parker, CO 80138.

Caleb was a friend to many. With a wicked sense of humor, a wry smile, and a deeply giving heart, he had this beautiful ability to connect with people from all different walks of life. He always prioritized his friends and a good adventure, even if that meant going to his shift the next day at Einstein´s on very little sleep. Caleb was a comforting presence for me in college. I love how some of our memories involve peacefully working on homework and eating dinner in the theatre building but other times we´d be in the same place, rolling on the floor late at night laughing and admitting embarrassing secrets until we forced ourselves to go home. Caleb is so deeply loved and I am so grateful to have known him.

I think my favorite memory (which is hard to pick, so I am picking a grouping) was when we working on The Performers together. He was my director and was my first standard play with Sandbox (if you could call that play standard). He was an amazing director. Always supportive, always wanting our input. He didn´t feel like he was above us, and always humble. He brought this energy to every rehearsal, like this was just a simple way to hang out with friends. I´m very proud to call Caleb my friend. He taught a young actor me the important ropes, and inspired me to be kind and to always be considerate. Love you Caleb.

Caleb was such a bright light at CU and was always a joy to see around the theatre department. I miss waving to him in the lobby and seeing him smile at and say say hi to everyone. I was lucky to work with him on the CU new play festival in 2022 where he directed my work - the moment I learned he´d be directing, I knew we were in great hands and had nothing to worry about. He was dependable, smart, and always so kind. Sending love to all who knew him and deep condolences to his family and friends.

I met Caleb during my very first play at CU and we quickly became close friends with him when we were cast in a short film together. He was one of the most caring and supportive people I had ever met. He made me feel welcome and helped me come out of my shell when I was first starting out in the world of performing. Caleb was an amazing person and an amazing friend. He was not only caring and supportive, but one of the funniest people I´ve known. He was also so incredibly talented and passionate when it came to theatre and acting and it spread to everyone around him. He was really a light to be around and made so many friends without even trying just from being his fun amazing self. I cherished all the times we hung out and most of my favorite moments over my time at CU were spent with him. I will always remember the walks back to our apartments after rehearsals, hanging out in the theatre lobby, the last minute self tapes and projects we helped each other on, and most of all - all the times we hung out and just had deep and meaningful talks about life and our dreams. He was always so authentic, caring, and real and taught me what a true friend was and to always be myself and appreciate and love myself. He was one of my first and best friends in the world of acting, theatre, and film and honestly at CU in general and he changed my life for the better in so many ways as I´m sure he did for many others because that´s just the kind of person he was. He was such a special human and an amazing friend and will be missed greatly.

Caleb was the warmest and most driven person I´ve ever met. Every goal Caleb set, he achieved it through hard work, determination, and an independent spirit. I still don´t know how we became friends so quickly and suddenly, but I´m eternally grateful that we did. He was surrounded by a supportive and loving family, and his love for them was always apparent in the way he´d talk about them. I just wish we could´ve gotten that coffee. I´ll miss you friend, but the happy memories will always be with me.

Work will never be the same without you. I miss you every day and hope you are somehow seeing the tiktoks and instagram reels I still send you. I´ve spent every week for the last 4 years with you, both in and out of work. I miss hanging out. I miss going to the movies with you. I miss you showing me your new weekly lego purchase and hyping you up from the monetary aspect of it. I miss hiking with you. I miss watching stupid cartoons with you. I miss shopping for your new LA clothes with you. I miss convincing you to get an apple watch so you can compete your steps with me (I lost every time). I miss you bragging about your US Women´s National Soccer Team jersey at work. I miss you using your "theatre voice" and accents while handing out customer orders (ruining all of our eardrums...). I miss you jamming to irish folk music at work. I miss you coming in on your off days even though you worked 40 hours just to say hi to me. I miss you coming in in your funky theatre outfits. I miss spending every week with you Caleb. One day, I´ll see you again.

Something I will always remember about Caleb is how passionate he was about things he loved. I specifically remember us talking at his graduation party and asking him what he planned on doing, his whole face lit up as he talked about how he was pursing a BFA in theatre. It was like in that moment he didn´t care what anyone else thought about it, he was just happy that he was doing something he loved and was passionate about. I also remember as a kid that he was just always so kind. He was always so present with others. Sending my love to you, Stuart´s. We love you guys.

You´ve forever touched the Legend Theatre Community, Caleb. It brings us great joy to see your plans to have continued in your passion for acting before your passing. You were a light and the fellow actors, directors, and theatre companies who have had the opportunity to work alongside are positively impacted for life by your love for storytelling and laughter. Hugs to the Stuart family.

Caleb was a great friend to me in the theatre program in boulder! He was one of my favorite people to see and I knew that every time we would hang out (usually in the lobby) it would be all jokes and laughs. Not many people made me feel as welcome as he did. I remember that he also one of the few people I know I could say "hey sexy!" to, and he would say it back.

I will always remember how smiley and kind Caleb was. I also can vividly remember him in his Packers´ jersey. I didn´t know him well in college, but I always knew he was someone kind who I could say hello to and he would crack a joke. Such an incredible actor and a truly beautiful person.

I always trusted in Caleb´s presence, which was most often in a class, where I might invite him to attempt some unusual task; whether or not he thought he had THE answer to the question, he gamely stepped into the unknowing of it all. On one occasion, when everyone in the room chose one person or character they´d like to share a drink with, Caleb chose his Dad. In the crowd of a classroom, Caleb didn´t need to be loud. He took delight in making just one person laugh. To his closest friends and family, he must´ve shone like a diamond. (Photo: September 21, 2020)

I remember my first time meeting Caleb, he was my acting coach to help my get into the acting BFA here at Boulder. He was so enthusiastic and really helped me as an actor, I also got the opportunity to act with him in Shakesfear and direct him in one of my classes. I always enjoyed talking to him about fantasy football or how we thought our teams seasons were going. RIP

Caleb was my student at CU Boulder, but I got to know him more closely when we worked together on a production of "Shakuntala" that I directed. What a journey it was with him! A kind, curious, and respectful soul with a sharp sense of comedy-Caleb commanded the stage in his brief but important appearance in the play. I remember Caleb as a young man full of potential, discovering himself more each day. Theatre brings souls together, and I am heartbroken by this tragic loss, but I'm grateful our paths crossed, and as long as theatre exists, Caleb will be remembered with kindness and respect. Much love to you, fisherman! May you catch the best fish, with a gold ring in its belly, on the other side.
My deepest condolences to Caleb´s family.

I did not know Caleb well. The Caleb I did know was kind, gentle, compassionate, thoughtful and incredibly dedicated. I never saw Caleb when he was not giving his best to whatever the task he faced. I'm sorry that the world cannot continue to benefit from this delicate, sensitive and admirable human being. I offer my condolences to Caleb's family -- it is clear he was deeply loved. He was the product of deeply caring parenting, and he shone that on the world around him. While his time was short, he made a lasting impression.

Caleb and I lived on the same floor freshman year at CU. We always smiled and said hello and through the years always did the same whether I was making his coffee at Starbucks, watching a friend (and him) in a theater production or in passing.

I didn't know Caleb as long as I wish I could've. I had the honor of hiring him onto be a Stagehand at Elitch Gardens. He was the hardest worker who did everything with a smile. He was kind, brilliant, and had a one-of-a-kind laugh. Every shift he came in with a Einstein Bagels dog treat for my dog. He is someone who really uplifted the team and made everyone's day a little better. He will be missed and we will cherish the memories we've been able to create with him this summer.

Caleb was one of my favorite people. He was also one of my first friends in the CU theater department. Although he was shy by nature, he never let it stop him from being incredibly kind, welcoming, and caring. He was the kind of person who would never judge you and always have your back no matter what. He had a very special and pure heart. He was also extremely talented as both an actor and a director. I know he would have done amazing things with his skills in the future. He never missed a birthday or an opportunity to love and support his friends. I will always cherish the memories we made in Boulder and in LA, it breaks my heart that we can´t make more. He was a special person and he will be dearly missed.

Sadly, I didn´t know Caleb as long as I would have liked to. He trained me at Einsteins and we became fast friends. Work was always a bit easier with Caleb working along side you. We shared the same love of performing and love of the arts... I will miss him and I will think of him often and fondly.

I remember Caleb fondly as a shy, quiet, but diligent student in his BFA acting class. He was always super respectful of me, and possibly a little scared as well...which I simply don´t comprehend why?!
Ahhhh but how he changed in the Directing class. For his first scene assignment, (perhaps someone can remember the title?) it was a naughty scene...with naughty props. In accordance with my practice, I gave him notes and encouraged him to go high and far since he picked the scene. Came performance day, the scene was 500% improved...the entire class, including myself, laughed uproariously, non-stop! That day, Caleb the director was born! He found his element and became a natural leader overnight. In fact, he even gained courage to talk back (jokingly) at me sometime.
Caleb, I cannot believe you would leave this earth before me, so please save a place for me up there in heaven...just as you used to reserve a seat for me to your shows. Much love, Dr. C

I´m going to keep this brief, because I cannot properly put into words how devastated I am to hear this news. Caleb was one of the very first people I met in CU´s theatre department. He was the one that took a chance on the silly freshman and gave me my first opportunity to show off my talents at CU. Him giving me this opportunity changed the course of my life, and I hope he knows how grateful I am because it really did change my life. He was one of the kindest people I´ve ever met. So genuine. Really caring and supportive in a pure way that cannot be taught. He was a beautiful soul that brightened the lives of everyone around him. I´ll never forget what he´s done for me and I´ll always cherish the fact that I got to work with him in the way I did. Fly high brother.

Caleb Stuart is one of the few artists that I can say I saw a night-and-day transformation in during his time at school. Every project he took on was a challenge for his growth that he took on with tenacity. I feel like he was constantly surprised at how he was able to make people laugh and engage with his work. I fully believe that his twisted sense of humor and his humility would have made him a leader in any arts community.

Caleb and I met in Kevin Rich´s Shakespeare class at CU Boulder. I´ll always remember his "hellooo" when introducing himself before a monologue. Or saying hi to him whenever I stopped in at Einstein´s on Baseline. I wish I was able to do shows with him. Please rest easy Caleb.

Caleb directed the first Sandbox show I ever worked on and I immediately saw how passionate and hardworking he was, while remaining so kind and patient to everyone involved. It's a little hard to tell, but we were laughing together and taking photos of each other because we got heavily rained on while building the Shakesfear set on the outdoor Mary Rippon stage. We both worked at the colorado shakespeare festival last year and it was always a great day when I got to work the same shift with him. I just wish we could have spent more time together.

Jamie Lammers

August 17, 2024

I unfortunately cannot say that I knew Caleb very well. There are two moments during his time at CU's theater program, though, that stick out in my memory. One is his shining moment as the Gravedigger in ShakesFear, where he owned every moment of his monologue. The other is his incredible directorial passion project, The Performers, as it was evident in every single way through the hilarious final product and his excitement for the cast and crew that he had dreamed of directing that show for a long time. Even though these were essentially the only times I got to know him and I didn't talk to him much, I saw the passion and excitement that emanated from him in the theater world. His presence will absolutely be missed, and this is a shocking and devastating loss. Rest well, Caleb. I wish I could have known you better.

Caleb held such a calming energy in a room. He was never shy about telling people he was a bit of an awkward person. I am also quite awkward and he made that feel okay. He made me (and others) feel like we could show up us ourselves. He helped me learn to laugh at myself when I made silly mistakes. He always said hello in the most delightful way when he saw someone he knew. I'm so grateful that he was my friend and I got to work on so much theatre with him.
