Calvin Dwight Thompson, age 83, a longtime resident of Bonner Springs, Kansas, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, after a courageous battle with Mesothelioma Lung Cancer. Visitation will be 10-11 am, with the Rosary beginning at 11 am; the Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 am, all on Monday, January 27th, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Shawnee. Burial will follow in the Bonner Springs Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions can be made to the Kansas Odd Fellows and Rebekah Vision or the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Those can be dropped off at the Visitation and Service or mailed to the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home.
Calvin was born on October 12, 1941, in Olathe, Kansas, to Charles W. and Irene C. (Sally) Thompson, and was the seventh of 12 children. Calvin and Geraldine "Gerry" Chance were united in marriage on January 20, 1968. He lived his adult life in Bonner Springs. Calvin served in many branches of the military, and part of his years of service was spent on active duty overseas. He retired from the US Air Force Reserves in 1998. Calvin worked for Lone Star Industries in Bonner Springs and, after leaving there, worked for the City of Bonner Springs until he retired. He was a member of the Bonner Lodge #357 Oddfellows, Saratoga Rebekah Lodge 660, both of Bonner Springs, KS., Wyandotte Encampment #9, Topeka #3 Canton. He was Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of KS, Past Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment, and was Colonel Retired Past Commander of Canton. Calvin enjoyed attending his children's sporting events and traveling to Seattle, Washington, to see the submarine his son Billy served on, the USS Nevada and USS Bremerton. He also enjoyed traveling with family to Branson and attending shows. Calvin and Gerry traveled to Nashville this past summer to attend the Grand Ole Opry. In his retirement, he volunteered and drove the Tiblow Transit and for the Senior Center in Bonner Springs.
Calvin was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Thompson, and mother, Irene C. Smith; brothers, Charles and Wayne; and sisters, Donna Jean, Edna, Lois, Barbara, Gloria, Charlene, and Donna.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Geraldine (Gerry) Thompson. Daughter Rebecca "Becky" Mock, of Bonner Springs, two sons, Glenn "Billy" Thompson and wife Jessica of Shawnee, KS, Brian Thompson and wife Danielle of Wichita, KS, Brother Newton Thompson of Florida, and sister
Pearl Garvey of Lansing, KS. Grandchildren: Michaela Mock, Jack & Weston Thompson, Braeden, Braxton, Alexis & Bryson Thompson. Great grandchildren: Jayden & Ace, as well as other extended family members and many friends.
