Carl Aubrey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2013.
Carl Lee Aubrey, age 74, died August 18, 2013 at his home in Olathe, KS with his wife, son & granddaughter present. Carl had suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease) for the last 2 ½ years. Services will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, August 24 at the Westside Church of the Nazarene of Olathe 1700 W. Santa Fe St., Olathe KS 66061. Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Friday at the church. He was born in Kansas City, MO on April 18, 1939 to Carl and Elizabeth Lee (Miller) Aubrey. He grew up in Claycomo, MO where he attended Munger Grade School, Brookwood Junior High, and then graduated from North Kansas City High School in May 1957. He attended Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, OK and then graduated in May 1962 from Oklahoma City University—Bachelor of Science in Business, Accounting major. After graduating from high school, he went to work on his brother-in-law's farm in Southwestern KS where he met the love of his life, Crystal Yvonne Wright. They were married in Sublette, KS on November 28, 1958. To this union were born 3 children – Cathy Louise (deceased), Carrie Lynette, and Curtis Lane. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; and a wonderful friend and mentor to many. In October, 1962, he joined MO National Guard Reserves as an engine mechanic. He attended Basic Training at San Antonio, TX Air Force Base; engine training at Wichita Falls, TX Air Force Base; and was assigned to Rosecrans Air Force Base, St. Joseph, MO. In 1965 he transferred to Air Force Reserves at Rhine Main Air Force Base, Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1968. Upon graduating from college, he resigned his job with the Federal Reserve Bank and joined the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) at its Kansas City Regional Office (a Congressional Agency auditing Executive Branch Activities). From 1965-1970 he was assigned to GAO's European Branch in Frankfurt, Germany covering territory west to England and east to Pakistan. In 1970, he returned to Kansas City Regional Office and was assigned to a special project in the Philippines. He finished his GAO career in the Kansas City Office retiring in September 1995 as an Assistant Director in charge of multiple audits. In addition, he was an instructor for supervisory and technical courses. He was active in the Association of Government Accountants and was the President of the Kansas City Chapter for 2 years, and later Regional Vice President for 1 year. Carl was a born again Christian who served the Lord faithfully until his death. His gift of encouragement was a blessing to many who received his cards and letters over the years. He was a compassionate and loving man who was gifted at reaching out to the hurting people around him and showing the love of Jesus to them. His Christian walk compelled him to be active in his local church and other places where hurting people needed Jesus. He served on the Kansas City Rescue Mission Board of Directors from 1985-1997. He joined the Board as Treasurer and in a few years became the President. While on the Board, Kansas City said the mission had to relocate. KCRM raised over $1 Million for the project and moved into a much larger, freshly renovated facility that was debt free. Carl was a Charter Member of New Hope Church of the Nazarene in 1950 (formerly Dundee Hills Church of the Nazarene). In 1965 he transferred his membership to Frankfurt American Nazarene Congregation where he served as a Board Member and Sunday School Superintendent. Transferred to Southwood Church of the Nazarene in 1971 where he was a member until his death. He served on the church Board, Finance Committee, Benevolence Committee, and also taught Adult Sunday School for over 30 years. Carl is survived by his wife, Crystal; his daughter, Carrie Amos (James) of Springhill, KS; his son, Curtis (Tricia) of Olathe, KS; 6 grandchildren – Chelsea Amos, Connor Amos, Nathan Aubrey, Olivia Amos, Julia Aubrey & Ava Aubrey; his brother, Gayland Aubrey (Wilda), Pueblo, CO; his sister, Carolyn Bird of Sublette, KS; his brother-in-law, Garry Wright (Gloria) of Tulsa, OK; and his brother Stanley (Eleaner) of Emmett, ID, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Cathy Louise; his sister, Eleanor Wright; his brother-in-law, Don Bird; and his infant granddaughter, Chloe Yvonne Amos. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Kansas City Rescue Mission 1520 Cherry St, Kansas City, MO 64108.
