Carl Back Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Higgins Memorial Home - Freehold on Feb. 1, 2026.
Carl L. Back, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, on January 31, 2026, in Freehold, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his beloved wives, Myrna Phyllis Hayman Back and Mona Michaelson Handler Back.

Carl grew up in the Bronx, New York, and married his childhood sweetheart, Myrna, in 1954. Shortly thereafter, he served in the U.S. Army during the post–Korean War era. Returning home, Carl began a distinguished career as an engineer that spanned decades and industries. His work took him from Massachusetts, where he contributed to defense programs during the Vietnam era, to senior leadership roles in major electronics firms in the Northeast.

In 1974, Carl moved his family to New Hampshire, where he served as president of Horton & Hubert. When that company closed, Carl founded OMB, a manufacturing firm that preserved jobs and supported the local community. Later in his career, he became an innovator in designer plastics, earning multiple patents for his work.

Carl lived in Old Bridge, New Jersey, with Myrna until her passing in 1995. He later met Mona, and together they built a life filled with travel, family, and joy. They spent many happy years in Florida before returning to New Jersey in 2021, continuing to embrace life fully until Mona's passing in 2022.

Carl is survived by his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were the center of his world. He will be remembered for his warmth, curiosity, generosity, and the simple pleasures he shared-planting strawberries, scratching lottery tickets, and long afternoons playing gin around the family table.

Carl will be interred in the family plot next to Myrna at the Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl's memory to Kindness Matters 365, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching and spreading compassion, empathy, and kindness through youth and community programs. Visit their website at https://kindnessmatters365.org/ to learn more or give in Carl's honor
