Phyllis Ann Hendley, age 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at CentraState Medical Center in
Freehold, New Jersey, after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 4, 1942, in
Long Branch, NJ.
She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Caroline and Phillip Roppoli; her brother, Patrick Roppoli; and her cherished partner of more than 20 years, George Bates, with whom she shared a deep love of antiques and a devoted, loving bond.
Phyllis is survived by her devoted daughters, Diane Dispenza (Craig) of Manalapan, New Jersey, and Sheryl Perez (Ronald) of Apopka, Florida. She is also survived by her former son-in-law, Tim Tennis, who remained a cherished part of her family and whom she loved like a son. Phyllis was a proud and loving grandmother to Timothy Tennis (Jihane), Tracy Tennis, Matthew Perez, and Kyle Perez, and a joyful great-grandmother to her sweet great-granddaughter, Talia Tennis, who brought immeasurable happiness and light into her life.
Phyllis was also a loving presence in the lives of George and Elisa Bates, Jr., as well as Victor Bota, Jr.
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, extended family, her lifelong friend Nicki Rubino, and many dear friends whose lives she touched with her warmth, wit, and creativity.
Phyllis was full of life and spirit-often described as a spitfire-with a beautiful smile and a vibrant personality that naturally drew people to her.
Phyllis spent her life in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, New Jersey, where she built deep roots and lasting relationships. A strong and independent woman, she wore many hats throughout her life. She proudly owned and operated Blue Bird Pet Shop in Toms River for many years, later worked for more than 20 years at Pathmark Pharmacy in Toms River, and spent several years as a graphic designer with the Advance News. Most recently, Phyllis retired after more than 23 years of dedicated service with the Ocean County Clerk's Office, where she formed many lifelong friendships and was deeply valued by her colleagues.
Known for her artistic talent and boundless creativity, there was little Phyllis couldn't create. She had a deep love for the beach and the ocean, spending countless cherished days with George enjoying the beauty and serenity of the Manasquan Inlet. A devoted and enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys fan, Phyllis attended several games and had the joy of meeting her favorite players.
For the final ten months of her life, Phyllis was lovingly cared for by the compassionate staff at Brandywine Howell by Monarch. Her family is eternally grateful for the exceptional care she received and the friendships she enjoyed during her time there.
Phyllis will be remembered for her incredible strength, fierce independence, artistic spirit, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
