Life Reflections
On December 12, 1943, the breath of God blew upon the Earth and man became a living soul. As God exhaled, He gave life to Carl Albert Barnes, the fifth and youngest child of Sammie (Shumpert) and Douglas Barnes, who proceeded him in death as did his brothers, William, Raymond and James Barnes and sister, Gloria Jean Nelson. God the giver of all life, in His infinite wisdom called him back to Himself on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
Carl accepted Christ at a young age at Parks Chapel A.M. E. Church, Cahokia Heights, (formerly Centreville) Illinois. Carl was educated in East St. Louis Public School District 189.
He was employed with Federal Mogul in
St. Louis, Missouri, where he retired after more than 20 years of service. He was also an entrepreneur with a mobile clothing business. For many years, he sold men's clothing and dressed countless men in fine suits and other attire. He was also well dressed and rarely seen without his signature hats. He loved to dress well and dance. Carl was a jack of all trades, very resourceful and was always trying to create the next great invention.
Carl was united in Holy Matrimony in 1963 to Shirley Jean Berry and to this union a son was born. On May 10, 1981, he married Beverly Boykin and was blessed with 2 daughters. Carl loved his family; his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved spending time with them. His children loved him dearly, he was their father and confidant, they were able to talk to him about anything and they knew he would give them sound advice without judgement. A man with an endless supply of dad jokes, the holder of the wallet and he gave freely. A man true to his word, he had a big heart, a boisterous and infectious laugh that was the hallmark of his personality. He instructed his children to love and assist anyone in need. He brought so much joy to his family. The heart of the father was turned to the children, and the heart of the children to their father. Carl showed unconditional love and loyalty as well as willingness to always provide words of encouragement to his family and friends. He had the ability to connect with people from all walks of life, no matter what their circumstances, making them feel special, sharing his wisdom and offering his sense of humor as a great gift that he gave to everyone he met, a gift wrapped in his deep compassion and understanding of humanity and tied with a bow of love that was reciprocated tenfold by those who knew and loved him. We, his family and friends, recognize his special aura, how he so effortlessly drew people unto the basic tenets of leading a good life. He didn't preach, but he taught and lead by example. He showed us how to treat each other and love one another. In his words, "Always assist a person that you love even if they don't share the same blood. How you treat people matters. Family are the people you love, always help them." His values, ethics and morals were a true measure of a real man.
Carl leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Beverly Barnes; one son, Carl (Dawn) Barnes, Jr., Chandler, Az; two daughters, Anjanette Franklin,
Granite City, IL and Christina Barnes,
Madison, IL; four grandsons, Devin Barnes, Christian Turnage, Shane Bennett and Bronson Bennett; three granddaughters, Talia (Lorenzo) Jirau, Aliah Barnes, Kennedy Bennett; one great grandson; three great granddaughters; one sister, Lorriane Perryman; mother-in-law, Mildred Boykin; three sisters-in-law and two bothers-in-law; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.
