Carl Edward Duvernay, a lifelong resident of Ocean Springs, passed away surrounded by family. Known for his love of bass fishing and his deep devotion to family, Carl’s life was defined by his care for others and the joy he found in everyday moments.
Born to Walter and Helen Duvernay, Carl grew up in Ocean Springs and carried with him strong family ties throughout his life. He began his career as a Marine Patrol Officer for the Wildlife Fisheries and Parks in the Bureau of Marine Resources, then became a game warden, serving as an area manager for Red Creek Wildlife Management Area, and later retired as a Marine Patrol Officer with the Department of Marine Resources.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jamie Lynn Duvernay; his parents, Walter and Helen Duvernay; his brothers, Lloyd James Duvernay and Donald Jack Duvernay; and his nephew, Nick Duvernay.
Carl is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rita Gill Duvernay, who was his steadfast partner in life. Together they raised their children, Jeremy Duvernay and Toni Ann (Alex) Bassenger. Carl was a proud grandfather to his pride and joy, Beckett Gill Bassenger, and Brayden Bassenger. He is also survived by his brother, Russell (Betsy) Duvernay; his sister June Duvernay; and from Texas, his sister Marie Coble, and his sister-in-law Jackie Duvernay, along with numerous nieces and nephews, as well as family friend, Camden Sweetser.
Carl spent his days enjoying the simple pleasures of life, whether casting a line or working in the yard alongside his good friend, Tava Thurman. His presence will be remembered for his easy smile, his love of the outdoors, and the joy he found in time spent with those he cherished most. His legacy lives on through his family, who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts.
