Carl Gaenslen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 17 to Jul. 23, 2023.
Carl Eric Gaenslen, has died at the age of 75. A proud retired Naval aviator, whose love of flying also included years as a commercial airline and airfreight pilot, Carl was also a consummate music lover. He loved to sing in the choir of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church and relished the low notes of the bass section. He seldom missed a Virginia Opera production or the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts at MacArthur Mall. Carl was passionate about listening to organ music, especially loud organ music with lots of fancy footwork! He served on the Vestry and several other committees at Christ and Luke's, which he was pleased to say was his spiritual home. He encouraged young people's musical education by serving on the Board of the Academy of Music and also volunteered as a Docent at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where he enjoyed sharing the wonderful collection with visitors. Carl's other passion was travel and he would combine musical and art filled events in his numerous trips. A kind and compassionate man, Carl also served as a mentor to many AA members. He is survived by his sister Marty and his many, many friends throughout Tidewater. His mischievous smile and the ever-present twinkle in his eye will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on September 9, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ and St. Luke's (560 W. Olney Rd.) with a reception to follow. Memorial donations can be made to Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 11499, Norfolk, VA 23517.

I met Carl at West Milwaukee High School our senior year. I had always been the youngest in my class until Carl showed up and took that place.
I met him in Pa Pete's English class and we soon became friends. We remained friends throughout the years, Carl's Christmas card was always the first to arrive. We heard about his trips and his adventures and hooked up a couple of times over the years, including California one time.
Carl was always a good friend. Deepest condolences to his friends and family.

I met Carl through a friend I often visited a few years ago. He quickly became a friend. He had a funny sense of humor, and it was soon evident he loved singing in the choir at church. I know he is loved by many, and will be so greatly missed by all of us, myself included.

Carl was a great mentor to me when I was at a critical career junction, and he will be sorely missed.

Carl and I were married a little over 11 years. Due to his duties as a Naval Officer, were were only together for a total of 36 months out of all those years.
After the divorce we remained friends and talked several times a year. Every phone call ended with us saying I love you. I will miss those calls so much, especially the birthday, Christmas and Easter calls.
Our last conversation was in February and Carl was looking forward to several up coming trips out of the country. I was shocked by the news of his death. However, I know Carl is in Heaven with his Lord and Savior happily singing in God's choir.
Carl, I will miss you dearly and I am so thankful for all the beautiful memories of our times together. I will always love you.
Carl had a quick wit and was a good natured tease. He was a kind and easy going fellow. I never saw him angry or heard him raise his voice.
Marty, I am so sorry for your loss.

Carl was my brother in law for few years and then a friend thereafter. Carl and Frankie came to a concert that we played somewhere in California. He drove a couple of hours to the venue and then took me their home in Cardiff by the sea we talked and had a few beers and he then repeated the trip to return me to my band mates. He got the biggest kick of how I cooled my beer in my Texas home around AUSTIN, TX. It was a Christmas visit and cold outside(30degrees). He loved to laugh and always encouraging with his big smile. You will be missed my friend. See you in eternity soon.

Carl was the love of my life. His love made me feel safe and secure and freed me to allow myself to be uninhibited and vulnerable again. He made time every single day for us and with his daily exhaustive schedule being "penciled in" was precious. As a nod to his love of music "waiting for Tonight" the Jennifer Lopez version pretty much how we were. I am and will always miss him terribly but having the memories of dancing in the kitchen and the joy and laughter we shared just reinforce and validate what a wonderful man he was.

Carl was a good friend and super fun choirmate, and I fondly called him "my fave"...because he always made me laugh and had a great sense of humor. We will miss him so much at Christ & St. Luke's, but I know that he has earned a new set of wings and is definitely singing in the heavenly choir. Thank you, Carl, for your kindness, generosity, spiritual leadership, and dedication to supporting music and the arts. Well done, thy good and faithful servant!

Carl and I met about 40 years ago. Over the course of those years, the breadth and depth of all he is - his integrity, intellect, humor and humanity - became more obvious and cherished. He will always be a treasured friend.
To me, for obvious reasons, he has been Flyboy. To him, because of my name, I have been Goddess.

Dear Flyboy,
Until we meet again, I´ll miss you. I´ll always be YVOG.

Marty,
I´m so sorry for your loss. He loved you more than anyone else.
