Carl Anthony Guidry

Judge Carl Anthony Guidry, age 90, a resident of Baton Rouge passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on December 8, 2024. Judge Guidry was born in Baton Rouge on November 24, 1934 to parents Louis Hilaire and Edna Barbay Guidry. He was a proud alumnus of Catholic High School Class of ’52 and then went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University in 1957. Judge Guidry received his ROTC commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Infantry upon graduation and went on to serve in the 31st Judge Advocate General Corps before being honorably discharged with the rank of Major. In 1960 Judge Guidry received his LLB/Juris Doctorate from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center and began a life long career in law. For 12 years he practiced law with former State Senator J. D Deblieux and in 1971 was the youngest judge to be elected to Baton Rouge City Court. In 1979 Judge Guidry was elected to the 19th Judicial District of Louisiana and served for over 20 years in both the criminal and civil sections before retiring as Chief Justice in 1996. Post retirement, Judge Guidry worked well into his late 70’s through Ad-hoc judicial appointments across the entire state of Louisiana. Judge Guidry was well respected by peers throughout his entire career as a consummate jurist, always professional and knowledgeable. He presided his courtroom with integrity and decorum and his proceedings and judgements were always fairly based on applicable law and tendered with compassion and resolve. Judge Guidry was a lifelong devoted Catholic and was one of the earliest parishioners of the newly formed St. Thomas More Parish in the 1960’s. He was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 969 and served as a Knight of St. Gregory. In 1952 the Judge attended Manresa House of Retreats for the first time and served as Manresa Captain for Group 2. He attended annually for the next 68 years. He and his wife Barbara faithfully served for years as weekly Perpetual Adoration Prayer volunteers at STM until their health no longer allowed them to do so. Judge Guidry was a devoted and model husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend whose love, strength, wisdom and faith was foundational to who he was. He loved fishing the marshes of Leeville and south Louisiana with his wife, brother Lee and sister-in-law Tickie. He was a lifelong LSU sports fan and supported his Atlanta Braves through thick and thin. 

Judge Guidry is survived by his 8 children, Thomas Guidry (Margaret), Stacy Whitesell, Kevin Guidry (Dr. Kathy Guidry), Gregory Guidry (Susan), Gerard Guidry, Susan Aguilar (Jim Dutcher) David Guidry and Stephanie Aucoin (Paul). Also survived by 14 grandchildren, Desiree Byrd (Jordy), Joseph Aguilar (Kandice) Matthew Guidry (Monet DuPlessis) Emily Guidry (Danny Ryan) Erin Aguilar Russo (Aldo), Marie Guidry, Ross Guidry, Luke Aucoin, Jude Aucoin (Catherine Autrey) Cecilia Leo (Nicholas) Peter Aucoin (Harmony) Lucy Aucoin, Anna Aucoin, Audrey Aucoin. 6 great grandchildren: Aife Ryan, Giovanni Leo, Rodrigo Russo, Scarlett Byrd, Alice Aucoin, Emil Guidry, Everett Aucoin; sister-in-law: Ann Louque; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life for 68 years Barbara Louque Guidry, his parents Louis and Edna Guidry, brother Lee Guidry (Clotilde), sister Edna Mae Laughrey (Larry) infant brother Charles, brother in law Dr. Roland Louque, nephew Richard Louque, son in law Larry Whitesell and great grandson Xavier Myles Aucoin.

Funeral services will be conducted by Father Eric Gyan at St. Thomas More Church, 11441 Goodwood Blvd in Baton Rouge on Thursday December 12, 2024. Visitation at the Church will begin at 11:00 am with recitation of the Rosary to start at 12:15 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 pm with entombment to follow at Resthaven Garden of Memory. Pallbearers are the Judge’s 6 grandsons: Joe Aguilar, Matthew Guidry, Luke Aucoin, Jude Aucoin, Peter Aucoin and Ross Guidry. Honorary Pallbearer will be son David Lohmann Guidry.
