Carl Alexander Jefferson Sr. was born on April 24, 1958 in Rochester NY at highland hospital to Mildred and Otis Jefferson S. He was the middle child hut acted like he was the oldest. He always wanted to be the boss. Taken on responsibilities and being the protector. He did have a mischievous spirit as a child often getting into sticky situations with his brother. He was the "go to," the listening ear and the problem solver to his siblings and many others. And when it came to his mother, Mildred, he would always step in to make sure everything was alright.
During his adolescent and teenage years, Carl played the Baritone and marched with Scotties Sabers from 1972 to 1973 until they became the Mighty Liberators in 1974. He consistently marched until 1978.
He attended Edison High School and participated in their apprenticeship program to become a printer. In 1977, he graduated high school and the apprenticeship program and would become a Journeyman for Case-Hoyt. At the age accomplishments and many knew. During this time, he purchased one of his prized possessions, a 79' Park Avenue, of 17, completing the apprenticeship qualifications in a trade was a very big deal. He was so proud of his chocolate and beige with gold specs. Everyone knew he was a man of class and elegance.
He had a huge sense of humor and was the life of the party in any situation he stepped his foot in. He was quick on his feet with a sassy response when needed. He was the voice of reason and brought peace, joy and laughter to all. If you knew Carl, you knew he was big on family. He was the link that brought everyone together.
Those who knew him affectionately as papa, will always remember him as an avid Buffalo Bills, New York Knicks, and New York Yankees fan, a connoisseur of fishing and Polo Ralph Lauren. If you knew papa, you could see the little man on the horse a mile away. He made buying Christmas and birthday gifts easy. A polo shirt, jersey, fishing equipment, blanket, money for the casino or any memorabilia would hit the spot every time.
Carl always knew who God was but during the summer of 1985 as a young adult he gave his life to Christ. During this time, God blessed him with a job as a Youth Correctional Officer at State School of Industry for Boys. He was a dedicated, hard worker who quickly moved up the ranks while employed at Industry and was well respected for well over 15 plus years, until he retired (around 2001). Recognizing the disparity among people of Color in a state ran facility, during and even after his retirement, he worked tirelessly to help others gain employment with the State School of Industry for Boys.
He would go on to meet his wife Lucille at club Safari while wearing his favorite Color, chocolate brown. It was said his suit made him look like a deacon. On April 17, 1995, he would marry his love, confidant and best friend Lucille Jefferson. He entered the marriage with four children, Anson, Carl Jr., Velvet and Jocelyn and did not hesitate to become pop to Roshawn, Samone and Russell. His four would now and forever become seven. He and Lucille were best known for how supportive they were with their children and grandchildren, often traveling to games, attending sporting events and ceremonies.
Carl was a role model to all and a father to many. If you knew Carl, you knew the love he had for children and not just his own, but to any child he came in contact with. He took great pride in touching the lives of any person, young or old he encountered. From just giving words of encouragement to going to watch their sports games. He was everyone's dad and all the children's papa.
He is pre-deceased in death by his father, Otis Jefferson Sr.; sister, Rita Irby; brother, Otis Jefferson Jr.; and grandson.
Papa leaves his cherished possessions, his 7 children; Anson Clark, Roshawn (Cliff) Cole, Carl (Ashley) Jefferson Jr., Samone (Kevin) Goode, Russell (Vivian) Ellis, Dr. Velvet Street and Jocelyn (Anthony) Jefferson; 20 grandchildren: Dashcelle, Tyshauna, Ashley, Anson Jr., Toni, Antonyo, Salena, John, Ethan, Destiny, Cartier, Camyah, Corrine, Adrienne, Kevin Jr., Kaia, Klarissa, Russell Jr., Zion, Demi, and Sean to always remember his precious memories. He also leaves his favorites: Shawntye, Corey, Logan, Arlicia (David), Lincoln and Londyn; his siblings Debrah (Butch) Jackson, Ronnie Oliver, Jonnie-Lynn Jefferson, Teresa (Ricky) Wallace, and Steven Jefferson are left to carry the torch.
His legacy is strong as evidenced by his children, grandchildren and host aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and others he recognized as family, children and grandchildren.
