Carl Kerby Obituary

Carl Kerby

July 21, 1935 - May 9, 2025

Carl Wesley Kerby, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Carl was born on July 21, 1935, in Waynesboro, Virginia, where he began a journey marked by dedication to family, faith, service, and community. He resided there until moving to Williamsburg in 2024.

Carl graduated from Waynesboro High School and continued his education at Fishburne Military School. His early years instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and leadership that would guide him throughout his life. Following his education, Carl served honorably in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment to country with the same steadfastness he brought to every endeavor.

In 1970, Carl founded Westhills Company Builders and Developers and subsequently, Westhills Ltd. Realtors in 1988. Through these ventures, he played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of his community by developing numerous residential communities and commercial properties. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit left a lasting imprint on the region's growth and development.

Carl's devotion extended beyond his professional achievements. For over 79 years, he was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. His service as a deacon and his participation on various committees reflected his deep-rooted commitment to his faith and to serving others.

His community involvement included The Lions Club, The Rotary Club, Augusta Homebuilders Association, The Valley Vocational Technical Center Trades School, The Salvation Army, The Staunton Rescue Mission, and his beloved Fishburne Military School. At Fishburne, he served in many capacities; as a trustee and as chair of the buildings and grounds committee. He was honored by being named Alumnus of the Year for his tireless dedication to the school's success. One of his proudest moments was the dedication of the Carl W. Kerby Alumni House in 2019.

A man of many interests, Carl had a lifelong passion for cars. Whether washing and detailing them or enjoying time behind the wheel, this hobby and his membership in The Shenandoah British Car Club brought him great joy in his free time.

Carl shared 65 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sara "Scottie" Kerby. Together, they built a life grounded in love and mutual respect. He is also survived by their son, Kendall Kerby (Kent); his brother, Jerry Kerby (Connie); his sister, Brenda Blough (Ron); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Kerby; father, Carl Kerby; brother, Dawson Kerby; and sister, Judy Lotts.

Carl's legacy lives on through the communities he helped build and the lives he touched through faith and family. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 22, 2025 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 301 S. Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia. Rev. Justin Moser will be officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro, Virginia.

For those wishing to honor Carl, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund (www.firstbaptistwboro.org), The Carl W. Kerby Alumni House Endowment Fund (www.fishburne.org), or Hospice House of Williamsburg (www.williamsburghospice.org).

I have known Carl for many years, starting with elementarty school. We graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1954 and since then Carl has been the "glue" that helped keep our class together through letters, reunions and luncheons. His obituary shows how involved he was in the things he valued - a life well lived. We will miss you, Carl
