Carl Lehmann-Haupt died on March 29 in Beaufort, South Carolina, at the age of 85.
Born in New York City to Hellmut Lehmann-Haupt, a scholar of books and printing, and Letitia
Grierson, an educator, editor, and book reviewer, he was educated at Ethical Culture Fieldston
School and Columbia University, where he studied French literature.
He had a distinguished career in graphic design, serving as founding art director of Metropolis magazine and retiring as Creative Director of AARP. A 2014 stroke ended his literary activities, but he continued to paint, focusing on abstract works. His long involvement with The Gurdjieff Foundation included his
editing of Martin Benson Speaks, a 2001 account of Benson's time with Gurdjieff. With his far-
reaching intelligence and engaging spirit, Carl had a wide circle of friends and was mentor to
many younger colleagues.
Married to the poet Celestine Frost for 44 years, he was the brother of Christopher Lehmann-Haupt (d. 2018) and Alexander (Sandy) Lehmann-Haupt (d. 2001). He is survived by his half-siblings, John and Roxana Lehmann-Haupt; his niece and nephew, Rachel and Noah Lehmann-Haupt; grand-niece, Lucy Lehmann-Haupt and grand-nephew, Alexander Lehmann-Haupt; his stepchildren, Jane and Preston Maybank, and step-grandchildren, Sasha, Dimitri, Holt and Olivia.
