Thomas Andrew Hale passed away on April 24 at the age of 67 following a brief illness. A long time member of Secession Golf Club, he had a home on the property having relocated from his native Midwest. Born and raised in Appleton Wisconsin, he attended Northwestern University and Duke Law School, graduating from both with high honors.
Tom began his law career in 1982 in Chicago with Sidely and Austin and later moved to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, and Flom, becoming one of their youngest partners. His career in Asset Management took him around the world but he loved Chicago, even the winters.
He had a passionate commitment to Northwestern University, serving on the Board of Visitors of the College of Arts and Sciences and vigorously supporting Wildcat athletics through both up and down years. An avid golfer himself, he was particularly involved in the men's and women's golf teams, hosting them at Secession during their spring training trips. He served as a mentor to many NU students, athletes and non-athletes alike, working tirelessly to help them achieve their career goals.
Tom was an outstanding lawyer, recognized nationally as a top investment management attorney. He retired from Skadden in 2011 but always remained active professionally, serving on numerous boards and providing legal counsel to several organizations.
He courageously embraced sobriety and throughout his recovery was a zealous advocate for AA. Over the past 25 years he tirelessly and compassionately counseled and mentored many, many individuals facing similar struggles.
When he moved to Beaufort, SC, full-time, he immersed himself in South Carolina Lowcountry history and culture. His love for the game of golf and its traditions made him a fixture at his two clubs, Secession and Glen View in Golf, Illinois. His move south afforded him the opportunity to travel frequently and widely with cherished friends, playing many of the best courses in the world and even gaining membership at Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England.
Tom was an attentive and devoted son to his parents, William and Katherine Hale, until their passing. He was well loved by his brother Bill and sister-in-law Suzy and was a doting uncle to nieces Caroline (James) and Stephanie (Dillan) and was just starting to work his Christmas magic on great-nieces Lily and Emma.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on June 2, 2025 at 5 PM at Secession Golf Club in Beaufort, SC.
