Carl Ray Reed, 89, of Taylorville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Arc of Sangamon Valley in Springfield. He was born on December 24, 1936, in a farmhouse near Beecher City, IL, the son of Joe and Bessie (Sloan) Reed. On September 1, 1956, he married Elsie Mabel Hendricks, and she preceded him in death after many beautiful years together.

Carl worked on the assembly line for CAT for 33 years before happily retiring. Outside of work, he enjoyed woodworking, going shooting, and spending time outdoors. In his younger years, Carl could often be found hunting and fishing. Above all, Carl loved his family and the times they spent together meant the world to him. His grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy and brought a special light to his life.

Surviving are his children: Rusty Reed of Mission Viejo, CA; Ricky (Gwen) Reed of Taylorville, IL; Mickey (Christine) Reed of Springfield, IL; grandchildren: Shannon Guetter; Brandon Reed; Jacob Reed; Adam Reed; Donn Diehl; and David Diehl; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; as well as his sister: Bonnie Stoldt of Shumway, IL.

Carl is reunited with his parents, Joe and Bessie Reed, his loving wife, Elsie Reed, as well as his two brothers, Kenny and Danny Reed.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL. A graveside service will follow at Fraley Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Good officiating.

I'm deeply sorry to hear about Carl. He was a swell guy and we went fishing a couple of times. He knew what he was doing. Condolences to his three sons.
