Carl Jim Rhoades, 79, passed away on March 17, 2024.
Jim was born to Carl James Rhoades and Edna Leah Olive on Sunday, July 9, 1944, in Pocatello, Idaho. The church bells were ringing at St. Joseph's Church as his aunt, "Little Edna," ran down the stairs in front of the old general hospital shouting, "Carl and Edna finally got their boy!" He joined three older sisters: Joyce, Patty, and Shirley. He was spoiled appropriately.
They farmed many places in the Tyhee flat and Reservation area near Pocatello and moved to different homes often. He grew up riding horses, hunting, and fishing with his dad and many loving uncles, aunts, and cousins.
He went to Tyhee Elementary, where in the first grade he met his lifelong best friends, Curtis Cutler and Dave Hart. He attended and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1963. While there, he was in FFA and High School Rodeo, and made many lifelong friends.
He married Valarie Trujillo after high school. He joined the National Guard and served. He and Valarie later divorced.
He then married Michaele Whitworth and they moved to acreage on Rapid Creek Road near Inkom, Idaho. Jim and Mike had three children: Jodi Michelle, Ryon Jim, and Riley Boone. As his children grew, he took them hunting and fishing and encouraged them in 4H, FFA, and High School Rodeo.
He worked for JR Simplot at the Gay Mine on the Fort Hall Reservation for many years until its closure. He then worked at the FMC Dry Valley Mine, near Soda Springs, until his retirement.
He enjoyed participating in rodeos and team roping for most of his life until he became disabled. He was a member of the Eastern Idaho Rodeo Association, the Snake River Team Roping Association, the Old Timer's Rodeo Association, and the PRCA.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edna; two sisters, Joyce Phillips and Shirley Doser, as well as many other relatives and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mike; daughter, Jodi Rhoades (Glenn) of Moore, Idaho; sons, Ryon Rhoades (Kimberly) of Kuna, Idaho, and Riley Rhoades (Erica) of Challis, Idaho; five grandchildren, William, Dushane, Gracie, Frankie, and Ramey; two step grandchildren, Austin and Kelsey; ten great grandchildren, Dominik, Tydus, Hayes, Emelyn, Vivian, Avon Lea, Jimi, Waylon, Brody and Presley. A sister, Pat Durfee, also survives him.
Jim will be cremated, and his remains spread in the Salmon River, where he loved steelhead fishing with his fishing buddies, Stan Rhodehouse and Ray Stone, as well as his family and many other friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Jim at his home on Rapid Creek Road near his birthday in July.
