Carl Henry Shaifer III, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born on April 15, 1932, in Newark, NJ, and was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn Gloeckner Shaifer. Carl leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to his family, church, and community.
A 1949 graduate of Andover, Carl went on to Princeton University, where he earned his degree in 1953, and he furthered his education at the Wharton School of Business. Carl worked for IBM early in his career, where he met the love of his life, Kathy. He then spent 33 years at the Winchell Company and later concluded his career at the Hirshorn Company in Chestnut Hill. Carl was a dedicated member of Summit Presbyterian Church, where he and Kathy faithfully served in many roles, and was also an active member of the Chestnut Hill Rotary Club.
Carl was known for his infectious laughter, warm heart, and ability to make everyone feel like family. He loved attending his children’s sporting events at Penn Charter and Springside, cheering them on at Cornell wrestling matches and traveling to theatrical performances from Philadelphia to New York City, Williamstown, and Los Angeles. No matter how busy his day, Carl would find time to show up for the people he loved.
Carl is survived by his sons Steve, John, Peter, and Andrew, and his daughters Katie and Mary. He was a proud grandfather to James, Thomas, Susannah, Sawyer, Caroline, Danny, Drew, Jacob, Charlotte, Bayne, Conor, Sarah, and Clare, and a great-grandfather to Georgie and Graham.
A memorial service will be held at Summit Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 29th at 1pm.
