Carla Ann (Loraff) Schellberg was born October 28, 1942, in Ortonville, MN, to Carl and Ollie (Douglas) Loraff. She grew up on a farm west of Big Stone City, SD, and attended District #2 Country School through eighth grade. Carla attended ninth through twelfth grade at Ortonville High School and graduated with the Class of 1960.
Being raised on the farm, Carla developed a strong work ethic and continued to help with the farm work on the family farm, especially during fall harvest. Following high school, she moved to Minneapolis and worked at Sears and Roebuck for six years. Carla decided to return to Ortonville and worked at North Star Dairy in Big Stone City, SD, for a few years.
While roller-skating at Mel’s Funland, Carla met Rueben Schellberg and was smitten with him. The two were married on June 6, 1970, at Hope United Methodist Church in Odessa, MN. Together, Carla and Rueben were blessed with 28 and a half years of marriage and three children: Jodi, Bill, and Chad.
Rueben and Carla made their home on a farm northeast of Ortonville, MN. They raised livestock and farmed grain. Carla enjoyed raising ducks, geese, and chickens. She was fortunate in being able to stay home and raise her family and work the farmland.
Carla loved to travel and a highlight for her and Rueben was when they traveled to California through Good Year Tire to do a commercial. She also loved visiting Universal Studios in California. Carla enjoyed doing puzzles and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. She also loved to do diamond painting after she moved into the nursing home. In her younger years, Carla had huge gardens and every year, she would do the canning of her produce.
Left to cherish Carla’s memory are her daughter, Jodi (Michael) Hormann of Wheaton, MN; sons: Bill (Katie) Schellberg of Milbank, SD; and Chad Schellberg of Crystal, MN; 10 grandchildren: Steven, Nathan, Rebecca, Rachel, Rueben, Courtney, Catilynn, Coltyn, Colby, and Cayson; brother, Robert (Connie) Loraff of Ortonville, MN; sister-in-law, Frances Conraads of Milbank, SD; wonderful friends, Russ and Mary Armstrong; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Carl and Ollie; and husband, Rueben in 1999.
