Carmelo D'Arrigo
4/27/1938 – 1/2/2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carmelo D'Arrigo, 84, on January 2nd, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. He left this world after a brief illness.
Carmelo was born on April 27, 1938 to Salvatore and Maria D'Arrigo in Ali Superiore. He lived a full life with his wife of 60 years filled with love, laughter, and good food. Carmelo was one of 4 children and outlived his brothers and sister, Giuseppe, Antonino and Giovanna, but remembered them fondly and with much love.
Carmelo immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1963. While in Sicily, he lived above a family owned grocery store with his parents and siblings, loved to drive fast and played soccer. Upon coming to the US, he quickly found work in a pizzeria in Chinatown, but eventually owned and operated his own pizzeria/restaurant in Lawrence (Mauros's) and then in Wheatley Heights (Little Joes's). One of Carmelo's greatest passions was making food for his family and friends. Other than family and friends, another one of Carmelo's greatest loves was his garden! He grew an extensive garden at his home that included hot peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, and every other vegetable or hot pepper you can imagine. He also enjoyed a good card game and making his own wine.
Carmelo is survived by his loving wife, Iolanda, only child, Giovanna, and two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Mark. Carmelo will be dearly missed and remembered for his ease and mastery in the kitchen, kindness and generosity to all, his sense of humor and storytelling, and innovative nature to solving problems. His life will forever be cherished by his family and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
The funeral service to honor and celebrate Carmelo D'Arrigo's life will be held on January 6th at Macken Mortuary in Rockville Centre, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend and share their memories of him.
Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected].
May Carmelo D'Arrigo rest in peace, and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to his family and all who knew him.
