SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI - Carmen L. Lullo, age 90, of Sands Township, entered eternal life Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Trillium House, in the loving, comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.
Born July 18, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Carmen and Olive (Rehe) Lullo, Carmen was raised in Chicago. With a longing to travel the world and experience some adventure, he enlisted in the US Navy at age 18. However, to his dismay, his two year hitch involved duty assignments upon the Great Lakes and training sessions. Upon his honorable discharge, Carmen joined the US Air Force where he received the travel and adventure he was craving. On June 9, 1956, Carmen was united in marriage to Catherine D. Gillaspie in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple's first home was at his duty assignment in Germany, with subsequent assignments in South Dakota, North Dakota, the Philippines, three temporary duty assignments in Vietnam, K.I. Sawyer, Okinawa, and finally Panama City, Florida, from where he retired from active duty. With his honorable discharge in hand, Carmen and family relocated back to Sands where he could enjoy the outdoors and all that nature had to offer. He always preferred the quiet and solitude of wooded areas and the hunting and fishing opportunities they provided. From 1974 until 1989, Carmen was employed in Civil Service at Sawyer. In his leisure, in addition to hunting and fishing, Carmen enjoyed gardening, cooking, and was talented in the art of woodworking, crafting and often selling his creations at craft shows. Additionally, he was avid fan of NMU Hockey and the Detroit Red Wings. Carmen was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church where he volunteered with the pasty crew, often keeping them entertained with his humorous comments. He also volunteered for Room at the Inn.
Carmen is survived by his wife of 68 years, Cathy; his children, Carmen "Tom" (Sue) Lullo of Payson, AZ, Mike (Kelly) Lullo of Huntsville, AL, Dawn (Bill) Dowling of Marquette, and Beth (Jeremy) Bolen of Houston, TX; his grandchildren, Kristen (Jaas) Amado, Ashley Dowling, Annalise Lullo, Loren Lullo, and Lyra Bolen; great-grandchildren, Luca Amado, Desmond Lullo, Mateo Lullo, Alex Dowling, Manolo Amado, and Jaaviela Amado; a sister, Mary (Don) Schwartz of Redding, CA; brothers, Jon (Sherry) Lullo of Milwaukee, WI and William Lullo of Sawyer; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carmen was preceded in death by a grandson, Kyle Dowling; sister and brother-in-law, Christine and John Scellato.
Funeral services will be held in the spring of 2025 and will be announced.
