Carmine "Sonny" D'Angelo

Carmine N. “Sonny” D’Angelo, 90, a lifelong resident of Worcester, passed away with the family he loved gathered at his side Wednesday, June 5th 2024. Carmine was born in Worcester, June 21st 1933, the son of Italian immigrants, Bonifacio and Assunta (Curci) D’Angelo.  He was raised in Worcester, graduated from Worcester Boys Trade in 1951, with a focus in carpentry.  He later earned his certificate to teach Carpentry in the State of Massachusetts.

While on a trip to Italy he had a chance encounter with a beautiful young woman. This began a two-year long-distance courtship by exchanging letters. He returned to Italy and married the love of his life Concetta (DelConte) there in her hometown in Feb 1963. Together they returned to Worcester and shared the next 54 years in marriage until her death in May 2017. Carmine and Tina, as she was known to most, became the foundation for the family they created, the purest example of love which they shared so generously with all who entered their home.    

Carmine loved carpentry and structural repair.  He began by working for several local building contractors in the Worcester area including Clark Hyson & Son for more than 25 years.  He then worked as lead carpenter for the College of the Holy Cross, before accepting a position as Construction Supervisor for the In-house department of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center before retiring in 1999.  

Carmine is survived by the family he loved; eldest daughter Assunta (Sue) Peirce and her husband James of Charlton; daughter Patricia Harkins with whom he lived and her partner Gerard Piscitelli who was also a dear and longtime friend of Carmine’s; his son, Mark D’Angelo and his wife Linda of Portland, CT; seven grandchildren he adored, Matthew and Monica Green, Benjamin and Jason Harkins,  Maria, Gianna and Nicholas D’Angelo; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  In addition to his parents and wife Concetta, two sisters, Lucy D’Angelo and Mary Fitzgerald predeceased him.  

Carmine was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, and the Pope John XXIII Council Knights of Columbus.   An accomplished carpenter and wood carver, Carmine enjoyed working in his workshop, carving, notably birds, tending his garden, relaxing on the beaches of Cape Cod, watching the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and Celtics.  The role he held dearest was father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and friends, helping them, anytime, anywhere or for any occasion whatsoever. He loved his faith, and lived with Concetta by their principles of, love, respect, and discipline.

Carmine’s funeral will be held Monday, June 10th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30AM in the Church of Our Lady of Loreto 33 Massasoit Rd. A period of calling hours will be held from 8AM to 10AM in the funeral home before departing for Church. Entombment will be in St. Johns Mausoleum.
