Carol Marie Carroll, age 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2022, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. Carol (nee Cosgrove) was born on June 23, 1934, in
Brooklyn, New York to Helen and Norbert Cosgrove. She was a graduate of St. Malachy Elementary School and St. Angela Hall Academy High School. It was here, in her youth, that Carol developed the most important tenets of her life - her love of God and devotion to the Blessed Mother, her love of learning and the value of education, and the importance of loyalty as she formed friendships that lasted the entirety of her life. Carol also loved and spoke often of her visits with her cousins in
Sayville, New York.
After high school, Carol attended St. John's University where she used her leadership skills and charming demeanor to create a local chapter of the National Lambda Chi sorority where she is remembered as a founding sister. She majored in History, which fueled her love of world travel. Carol graduated from St. John's with more than her diploma. For here is where she met the absolute love of her life, her husband Peter. When she saw all 6'5" of him at center court of Madison Square Garden, she knew they were meant to be. Their marriage was 65 years of "True Love" (their wedding song) and anyone who knew them was privileged to witness a match written in the stars.
Carol then devoted the rest of her life to her five children. She would tell anyone if asked that they were her life's greatest work. She is remembered adoringly for the countless hours she spent listening to school speeches, pretest quizzing and late-night Spanish tutorials. Later, she would tell people she actually had 10 children as she loved her children's spouses as if they were her own and subsequently welcomed her in-laws' families at every gathering creating celebrations second to none.
Carol was also the grandmother to 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom she loved beyond measure. When she wasn't traveling the world with Pete, she loved nothing more than gathering the entire family together for a good party filled with laughs and Manhattans. Always the quintessential lady, she had a surprisingly earthy sense of humor and, along with her quick wit, would deliver one of her infamous one-liners that would dissolve everyone into tears of laughter. Carol and
Pete spent most summers of their marriage on Long Beach Island, where "Grammy's Chowder" from a generation's old recipe along with some "nice" rolls and her cupcakes drew the four generations together.
Carol was a woman of great Faith and longtime parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church in Oakwood. She loved praying the rosary and served as a member of their Rosary Altar Society.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Norbert Cosgrove and her brother Dr. Paul N. Cosgrove. She is survived by her husband Peter F. Carroll and her children, Kathleen Vazzana (Dr. Thomas Vazzana), John Carroll (Sharon Carroll), Peter Carroll (Sally Jo Carroll), Helen Delahanty (NYPD Inspector Thomas Delahanty), and Dr. Paul Carroll (Tracy Carroll). Beloved Grammy of Dr. Kathleen Vazzana, Dr. Virginia Rahming (Dr. Shaul Rahming), Jennifer Delahanty, William Carroll (Kelliann Carroll), Andrew Carroll (Elaine Carroll), Caroline Vazzana (David Lopes), Thomas Delahanty (Nicole Delahanty), Victoria Carroll, Esq. (Ian Williams), Thomas Vazzana, Kevin Carroll, Lauren Carroll, Amanda Carroll PA-C, Mackenzie Carroll, Lindsey Carroll, James Delahanty, Katelyn Carroll, and Matthew Carroll. Beloved Gigi to great-granddaughters Bella Lee Rahming and Maisy Frances Carroll. Dear sister-in-law of Eileen Cosgrove and Helen Carroll.
