Carol Greenwood Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweet's Funeral Home on Feb. 21, 2026.
Carol Jean Greenwood, 73, of Hyde Park, New York, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, January 30, 2026. She is survived by her husband, Mike Greenwood.

Born on March 16, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, Carol was the daughter of the late Harold Helmers and Olus Graves Helmers. She graduated from Riverview Gardens High School, Saint Louis, in 1970.

Out of high school, she began her career employed at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Throughout her life, Carol would continue to work for various companies including Hyde Park Nursery School, TEG Federal Credit Union, and, after 12 years with Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, she retired. In her younger years, she loved to

sew and crochet. She even designed and made the skirts for her bridesmaids and the wedding dress of her high school home economics teacher. Carol was an avid traveler who was fortunate enough to explore a great deal of the world, many times with her family. Some of the most memorable trips included Italy, Australia, a cruise to Mexico, and visits back home to St. Louis. When her children resided in different cities, she always enjoyed visiting them, whether in Boston, Providence, Philadelphia, New Orleans or New York City. It was these experiences she valued deeply as she was always in favor of having a good time with those she loved.

Although Carol enjoyed her work and travel, her co-workers and tasks, as well as many fun adventures, what she cherished most of all were her roles as Mom and Mima . Above all else, she adored spending time with her children and grandchildren and was proudly involved in every aspect of their lives. When her children were young, she was their cheerleading coach and an ever-present source of support, encouragement, and celebration. Known for her kindness and willingness to help others, Carol was truly "always there to lend a hand." She was also always ready to strike up a conversation with friends and strangers alike.

On April 8, 1972, Carol married Mike. The two would share 54 wonderful years together. In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by her children: David Greenwood and fiancée Mairead Harte along with their children, Jason Arnott and Eoin Greenwood; Rebekah and husband Bob Brandl along with their children, Devon Brandl, Taylor Brandl and fiancé Christian Edwards, and Caden Brandl; Rachel and husband Ed Reding along with their children, Monty Reding and his baby sister; Jennifer Greenwood and husband Jeremy Peres along with their children, Nate Peres and Emilia Peres.

Calling hours will be Saturday February 28th from 11:30am to 2:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life from 2-2:30pm at Sweet's Funeral Home in Hyde Park, NY.

Carol will be inurned at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in a private service.

I have a fun memory to share: my mom and dad were big fans of Sing Along With Mitch (you might have to look that one up!) They had all his LP albums, which came with lyrics sheets, so you could "sing along" even if you didn't know the words. My dad would add long speaker wire to our hi-fi (look that up too!) and prop it up in the window that opened to our back your. We would invite all the neighborhood kids to come for a Sing Along, and I can still picture Carol singing every song! I wish I had a photo of that to share.

I loved reading the loving memory your family wrote for Carol. To my family, she was always Carol Jean, because there was a Carol Ann that also grew up on our street! It was so much fun getting reacquainted after we attended a high school reunion, and staying in touch afterwards. I will always wish we had found a way to take a trip together, she was really quite the traveler. We were blessed to be in each other's lives for this season on earth; I look forward to our next reunion.
