Carol Weiss Lewis died peacefully Monday, December 2, at Hartford Hospital after fighting multiple medical problems. Born in Ohio in 1946, she grew up in the New York City borough of Queens and became a proud product of the NYC public education system. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Cornell in government, her master's and doctorate in political science (the latter in Soviet studies) were from Princeton. Very bright and a quick study, Carol loved nothing more than writing and doing research, and until just a few weeks before her death was revising yet another edition of "The Ethics Challenge in Public Service." In addition to her extensive research and publication, especially in the field of government ethics, she was a consultant and trainer for public agencies and professional organizations from the local to the international level. She taught in the political science department at the University of Connecticut for over 20 years. Carol was a member of the Mansfield Democratic Town Committee and was on its nominating committee.
Carol married Saul Nesselroth in December 2006, after which they enjoyed many years of international travel for their work and their mutual enjoyment, satisfying Carol and Saul's healthy appetites for adventure. They made their home in Storrs, CT, among the many friends that they had made in their combined 60 years of teaching at UConn, and over 80 years of residency in the town. Carol loved to host parties and events at their home for family and friends.
Carol was a very strong supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. She supported many Jewish and Israeli charities, and visited Israel often. As members of Beth Sholom B'nai Israel, she and Saul established an Israel advocacy fund.
In her honor and lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Beth Sholom B'nai Israel (BSBI), in Manchester, Connecticut or to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 10:00 am at the Beth Sholom B'nai Israel, 400 Middle Tpke E, Manchester, CT. The graveside service will follow, at the Beth Sholom Memorial Park Cemetery. To leave a memory or message of condolence, please visit
