Carol dedicated 14 years of her career to the Mirro company, followed by another 14 years at Uni-Mart, retiring in 1987. In 1990, she began working as a baker for her family's business, Novy's Supper Club, and continued to share her baking skills in her own kitchen, passing on her knowledge to her grandchildren. Carol and I were friends since before Kindergarten. We found each other across what was then an empty lot between her house and mine and became instant friends. I was fascinated by her family, because she had eleven siblings to my meager two! My memories include going into her house to see her mother making homemade pasta and hanging the strands over the kitchen chairs to dry. During the school year we would walk to St. Luke´s grade school by ourselves. It was expected that we were in a safe environment and did not need any adult supervision. Our teachers were members of the Sisters of Saint Agnes order. There is some folklore told by our classmates, that when we were in the 3rd grade, Carol and Sister ? (her Name escapes me) had a difference of opinion about Carol´s habit of talking when she should be listening. To help her mend her errant ways, her teacher had her sit under the teacher´s desk. After some time had passed, there came a rhythmic sound drifting out from under the desk. Upon investigation, it seemed that Carol´s clever way to contemplate her sin was to pull out her ball and jacks and play, therefore the rhythmic ball bounce-sound!

So many years, so many stories. We were allowed to stay out at night until the street lights went on. Most times we spent playing street games with other neighborhood kids, but there were times we would raid the neighbors victory gardens, just to see if we could get away with it.We wore Navy P-coats and thought we were pretty cool . In high-school we double dated for Junior prom, and went to sleep overs ,with many of our other girl friends. After graduation, I left to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and she stayed in Two Rivers to work. I stood up for her wedding and fifty years later, Jim and I came to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Then they came down to Milwaukee to celebrate with us when we reached our 50th year together Whenever we could, Jim and I would spend time with Carol and Frank in Two Rivers.just reminiscing over a few cocktails at the many class reunions. I will miss her physical presence when I am back in Two Rivers, but I know she will be there for me in spirit.
