Carol Irene Thornton, 74, passed away on December 12, 2024. Born on November 6, 1950, Carol was a woman who could never be fully described by words-she was, as her friends lovingly said, "a character."
Carol was a woman of intelligence, compassion, and fiery determination. She obtained her Bachelor of Science and Nursing from McNeese State University in 1972, her Master's degree from Texas Women's University in 1977, obtaining her designation as a nurse practitioner. She was a proud member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing as of 1988.
Carol became a nursing instructor at McNeese State University and became a board-certified Diabetes instructor in 1992. She approached life with vivacity, always unafraid to speak her mind, take charge, and share her unique humor. Her sharp wit and strong-willed nature always provided entertainment.
Carol's love for her friends and family was unparalleled. She loved to spend time with animals, especially dogs and horses. Carol cherished time spent with loved ones, often insisting they sit close and hold her hand. She adored watching LSU football, Saints games, and hours of game shows. She was always quick with the answers due to her mind that remained sharp as a tack, even in her later years. Her all-time favorite show, Friends, captured her lively spirit and sense of humor.
Carol is survived by her one sister, Gloria Hill of Kingstown, WA; her nieces and nephews April Brown, Emily Larsen, Robert Coulson, Marc Coulson and Jeremy Wilson. Her dear friends and caregivers, Greta Ratliff, Karen Howard, Gaye McCarty, Janice Zachery, Linda Lavine and Linda Thomas. Her Honorary grandchildren Eklain Thomas, Ekallien Thomas, Marcus Zachery, Taylor Zachery, Stephanie Zachery, and Nicole Roy. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert A. and Gloria Thornton, her stepfather, Robert Wilson, and her twin sister Mary Elise Wilson, whom she always held close in her heart.
A memorial service celebrating Carol's extraordinary life will be held on January 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Visitation will be open to the public at 12:00 PM prior to the service.
Carol lived life on her own terms, full of passion and laughter. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know her. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Humane Society or McNeese State University nursing program.
