Publish in a newspaper

Carole Ann Hammond was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 14, 1942, the youngest child of Grace (Lunsford) and Benjamin (Bennie) Hammond. She was the baby sister to Benjamin, Jr. (Sonny), Lillian (Gaygay), Betty, Fred Louis (Freddie), Robert (Bobby) and Raymond.

She went to primary school on the North Side and in Homewood and graduated from Westinghouse High School. Carole went on to pursue higher education and earned her Master's Degree from the University of Pennsylvania. While going to school, she worked many jobs to provide for her family. Upon completion of her degrees, she worked for QED, the PA Department of Education, the Agency of International Development, was the Assistant Director of the CCAC Homewood-Brushton Center, was a leader and mentor for the Male and Female Offenders Program and retired from CCAC, where she taught Business Courses.

Carole always said she was given two special gifts in life, her sons – Christopher Guy Reid and Cory Hasante Hammond. Carole married Clarence M. Alexander and became Carole Ann Hammond-Alexander. Clarence passed in June 2001.

Carole was a fighter, adventurous and dared to be different. Whether equality, segregation, politics, women's rights, skydiving, skiing, hunting or cancer, she gave it her all. She won a scholarship to study internationally and joined the Army, only be talked out of both of those adventures. Afterall, she was female in the early 1960's and women just didn't do those things…then.

She was an active and faithful member of the Daughters of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. She served the BonAmi Temple #49 for over 40 years and the Alpha Council #1 for over 20 years and held positions of Daughter Ruler, Trustee, Financial Secretary and Assistant Financial Secretary.

After a three-year courageous fight with cancer, Carole died peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Those left to cherish her memory: Sons – Chris Reid and Cory Hammond, Brother – Raymond Hammond, Grandchildren – Brittany Reid, Christopher Reid, Jr, Shawn Redmon-Hammond, Great Granddaughter – Brielle Williams, nieces, nephews, special friend and caregiver Antoinette (Toni) Bowe; plus a host of other friends.

Internment at Homewood Cemetery.
