Carolyn Satrang Andrews was born October 17, 1941 to Harry and Ida (Lien) Satrang. She grew up on the family farm northwest of Hillhead, SD. Her mom passed away from breast cancer when she was 3 years old. She lived with different aunts and uncles until the age of 8 when she returned home and assumed the role of "woman of the house." She spent the rest of her life from that moment on taking care of others. They lived just down the road from her grandma Helga Satrang and Uncles Jude and Gilly. Grandma Satrang took over the role of "mom" for her and her siblings, passing on her amazing baking and sewing skills. Carolyn became well known as THE BEST when it came to homemade cookies and lefse.

The family farm had cattle and she and her brothers would ride calves, and when they would bring the cows in for milking she would hop from cow to cow to hook the chains up to each one. She and her siblings also would sled down the hills of the Stigadevin on shovels, but she was so little she would sled using a wash basin. One of her brother Luverne's best memories was the two of them breaking horses for their Uncle Bob Vietmeier when they were 9 and 12 years old.

Carolyn was always little, feisty and mighty. She was only 4'10" when she graduated from Britton High School in 1959, but she was a force to be reckoned with when needed. She had an infectious laugh and thoroughly enjoyed life. She was even known to race the cops down mainstreet of Aberdeen in her 57 Chevy at the urging of the cop. She loved the sport of rodeo and was instrumental as a founding member of the Buckhorn Rodeo Association. She put her many skills to work by sewing the original Buckhorn flag as well as the red vests members wore in the early years. She remained a lifetime, and quite active, member until her death.

Kids were her joy. She cherished her own children and spent many years babysitting for friends and other families' kids. She was blessed with six grandchildren that meant the absolute world to her and felt truly blessed beyond words to have been able to have her great-grandkids get to know and love her.

Carolyn passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2025 surrounded by her family at the age of 83.

Grateful for sharing her life are her children, David (Brenda) Andrews and Susan (Mike) Smith; grandkids, Mandy (Mike) Brown, Amber (Josh) Bowen, Angie (Alex) Hannasch, Dustin Andrews, Tucker (Katelyn Nehlich) Smith and Turner (Kassidy Larson) Smith; great-grandkids, Wyatt and Hunter Hannasch, Spencer and Nolan Brown, Brendan, Elise and Colton Bowen; two very special nephews, Kristian (Kelly) and their children, Coalter and Claudia Watkins, and Kory (Danielle) Watkins; her brother Luverne (Karen) Satrang and many other nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant sister, Darlene; sister, Claudia Watkins; and brother, Leroy Satrang.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Susan Smith – 42848 108th St. – Britton, SD 57430.
