Carolyn Tuttle Banner, our fun-loving, caregiving, generous and thoughtful daughter, sister, wife, stepmother, grandmother, great grandmother, neighbor and friend passed away quietly and peacefully at home on a beautiful Sunday morning, June 22, 2025.
Carolyn was born on March 22, 1942 to Blaine and Beth Tuttle in Salt Lake City Utah. Right away her parents knew she was going to be a fiercely independent child. Carolyn spent much of her childhood in Holladay, Utah where she graduated from Olympus High School and later attended BYU-which knowing Carolyn might surprise some! She worked most of her years at U.S. Steel and Geneva Works providing customer service and support.
In the early 1980's she met Clyde Banner when they both worked for U.S. Steel's western region sales and marketing office. They were married on March 6th, 1983 in Elko Nevada and spent 40 years together before his passing in 2023.
Throughout Carolyn's life she selflessly took care of many of her family members, including her mother, sister, brother, aunt and husband Clyde-who she devoted herself to until his passing. It was not an easy task caring for him during this period of time, since she herself was experiencing her own serious health issues. But Carolyn had the important qualities such as devotion, toughness, endurance and strength that served her well during difficult times.
Carolyn was an anomaly to some. She was known for her direct and what some described as her "sassy" and "irreverent attitude". She certainly would always tell you what was on her mind and people that knew her loved that about her.
However, Carolyn had a soft side that we don't believe she liked people to know she had. She was always the first one to offer help in a crisis or "just because". She truly had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need. During her entire life she seemed to "adopt" both pets and people alike-and she had the true heart of a caregiver in every sense. There were numerous people and pets on her life journey who were the beneficiaries of her generosity. One thing she loved to do was to surprise a driver behind her in a drive thru and buy their meal.
Carolyn made, built and maintained long relationships with friends from her childhood, her career and her neighborhood. She always tried to stay in touch and know about what was going on in their lives. Of course, she also enjoyed a good joke, a good laugh, a good meal-mostly when someone else cooked it-a good book and good ride around town and in the mountains-and of course she insisted on driving almost to the last day of her life! She adored people, animals and loved doing puzzles, coloring and any craft her Visiting Angels friends came up with. She also loved to keep her mind and hands busy and not even lung and colon cancer seemed to slow her down!
She also loved skiing in her "younger years" and taking trips with Clyde. They loved spending weekends at their summer home at Flaming Gorge-even though some of us believe the time she spent there was hard for her because there were few people, fewer shops and no phone. We are sure it drove her crazy that she couldn't keep in touch with her "network" of friends and family while there!
Carolyn loved talking with anyone and everyone. She never met a stranger. Carolyn had the funniest sense of humor, everyone loved visiting with her, and her laugh was contagious! She lived most of her life in Utah except for her time in Hawaii and California, where she loved the ocean and spent hours on the beach and boating. She also enjoyed crocheting until she ran out of friends and family to give an afghan to.
Carolyn is survived by Stepchildren: Robert Banner (Felicia), Kathy Price (Philip), Gary Banner (Shanna), Alan Banner, and Kristine Hopkins (Michael) and 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews-Andrea Theis, Rachel Zizumbo, Erika Kukaswadia and Bryan Tuttle.
She is preceded in death by:(Husband) Clyde Banner (Parents) Blaine and Beth Tuttle, (sister) Teena Sorensen and (brother) James Tuttle and great grandson Landon Banner whom she missed dearly.
All that knew her will miss her sense of humor, her jokes, her laugh and the phone calls to check in and "find out what was going on". She did this because she always wanted to be "in the know". We will miss her response, "What the hell? Why didn't someone call and tell us? No one tells us anything". We know that was just her unique way of checking in to see how she might help
Carolyn was definitely one of a kind and will be dearly missed by many

I will greatly miss my Cuz, aka Carolyn! Even though we lived across the country from each other, so we didn´t see each other enough, I often think of her-and our phone conversations were a hoot! Besides, what will I do now with the insulting birthday cards that so amused my Cuz????
The aunt who was part of the crowd that Carolyn selflessly cared for was her Aunt Marva, my Mom. They became great friends decades ago, and Mom was able to stay happily in her home in great part because Carolyn brought Mom so much humor, so many fun activities, and so much support!
And I can testify to Carolyn´s entertaining personality, too! During one of my stays with Mom, it occurred to me that I hadn´t visited Hogle Zoo in years and invited my Cuz to join me. "Why the hell would I want to go to the zoo????!!!!" she exclaimed. But she agreed, and we had a super time, as Mom and I always had with Carolyn.
I am inordinately grateful that my Cuz stayed connected with over decades and that she had the strength to overcome so many serious illnesses and stay with us all for so many years. May she rest in peace-when not joking with everyone she meets wherever she is! (This is a photo of us Cuzzes from my visit in 2023.)
