Carolyn Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors - Hodgson Chapel on Sep. 23, 2025.
Carolyn L. Brown, Ed.S. gracefully transitioned from an earthly angel to a heavenly angel on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. She was born on April 28, 1946 in Savannah, Georgia to the late Everett Lewis Sr. and Mamie Roberta Heyward Lewis. She attended public grade schools and graduated from Sophronia M. Tompkins High School in 1963. Then, Carolyn went on to study at Savannah State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1967. She also earned her Master's and Specialist's degrees in education from Armstrong State College and Georgia Southern University respectively.

After college, Carolyn began her long and distinguished career as an educator. She taught Language Arts and Reading for 35 years, and 33 of those years were spent teaching at Mercer Middle School. As a dedicated educator, Carolyn served in several leadership roles including New Teacher Mentor, Spelling Bee Chairperson, and Language Arts & Reading Department Chair. Carolyn enjoyed teaching, cared about her students, and had positive relationships with her co-workers. Two of her proudest career moments were when she was chosen by Wal-Mart to be the State of Georgia Teacher of the Year and when she completed her fellowship with the National Writing Project.

As a child, Carolyn was raised in a home that taught her the value of family and faith. She grew up in and continued to attend Taylor Chapel AME Church until her passing. While a member at Taylor Chapel, Carolyn was a steadfast servant of the Lord and labored in many capacities including, but not limited to the following: Sunday School (teacher); Savannah District Commision on Health (secretary); Steward Board (secretary); Young People's Department (director); Vacation Bible School (chairperson); Smith-Rosalee Busby Women's Missionary Society (vice president and secretary); and Taylor Chapel Senior Choir (treasurer).

After retirement, Carolyn became a member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. (TLOD) – Savannah Chapter, and in this organization she volunteered to advance the welfare of others through community service. Carolyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, shopping, and reading. She will be remembered for her calm, positive, and loving manner in addition to how she saw goodness in every person and situation. Her favorite adage was "This too shall pass". She was and will always be an angel.

At the time of her passing, Carolyn was the matriarch of the Heyward Family (her maternal family). Surviving, are her husband of 56 years, Theodore "Ted" "Pie" Brown; daughter, Dr. Caryn L. Brown; bonus son, Keith L. Brown, (Wakea); grandson, Keon J. Brown; brother, Everett Lewis, Jr. (Debra); Special family friend, Kamal Piankhi; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
