I didn't know that she passed in 2023 (I only saw now on FB ). She was one of the smartest women I ever met; it's so sad to think of her no long contributing to the world and scholarship. One story not quite about her, but related to her, is the following. When her husband came from Kenya to the US with her, he asked her what the round dark circles were on the sidewalk. She didn't know, she had never thought about it. But, she then realized, they were gum stains. He was so disgusted that people would do that and even more so when he realized they were permanent, lasting for years. To this day, decades later, when I'm walking along a sidewalk, and happen to glance down and see those circles, I think about how the stranger can illuminate your world, enabling you to see what is perfectly obvious. And how the selfish act of a single moment can mar the world forever.

Prof. Carolyn was a very kind, and generous human being. I met her when she led a group of students from Brown school of social work visiting Tanzania (Rorya) for a field practicum in June 2016. I had a conversation with her, each time she was asking are you interested in this, in that... she always wanted everybody to grow (career-wise). She influenced my career a lot as I moved more into research. I truly thank her and I will miss her a lot. May she continue rest in eternal peace.

Carolyn was my professor, the chair of my doctoral dissertation committee, and more recently, a colleague at the Brown School. She was a fantastic mentor/advisor and teacher. She put in countless hours and energy investing me. As a fellow professor, she was a real partner in the work of teaching and mentoring students. She was also a great source of advice and counsel as I've learned to navigate the academic world over the years.

More importantly than all this, however, she was a kind, generous, caring soul, and a good friend. My fondest memory of our times together was when we worked on a research project in Samburu County, Kenya for several weeks in the summer of 2015. I lived in her house. I met her family. We travelled all over the county interviewing some amazing people.
We cooked together... listening to music as we cooked. We watched movies together. In those kinds of settings, any vestiges of the student/advisor 'barrier' (and there really weren't any to begin with in Carolyn's case) faded away... and we became friends. What a fantastic, rich, learning-filled summer! A true life-highlight... I'll never, ever forget!

We shared a love for and a commitment to Africa! She spent many years living and working in Kenya. I grew up in Burkina Faso and have lived and worked in several other African countries. Nearly all non-Africans that I've ever met who've spent extended time on the continent, have shared some version of "once Africa's in your blood... it never leaves!" Truly beautiful people... Truly beautiful places... It was such a joy to share that connection with her.

She is loved. She is missed. My deepest, heart-felt condolences to her family and friends. Rest in Peace, Carolyn.

I haven“t written so far because words escape me. She was such a dear friend and next door neighbor. She was such an inspiration and awesome woman with a kind heart. She had more strength and determination than I could imagine. She loved her daughters so much and wanted to be alive for them. She fought so hard to stay alive. I will miss her friendship forever.

It is such sad news that the global community of social scientists lost a brilliant mind. Carolyn left behind a wonderful legacy and set an extraordinary example to follow. Carolyn, thank you for being an amazing mentor! You will be terribly missed!

Dr. Carolyn Lesorogol and I joined the Brown School faculty within two years of each other.
Through her years on faculty, she has left an indelible legacy of excellent, use-inspired scholarship and deep mentorship and caring for her students. I was fortunate to know her as a cherished colleague over most of my career - having served on many committees together (loving that we always seemed to be on the same page no matter the topic) and as a regular guest speaker in my courses through the years (she never turned down my invitations!). Yet, I most cherish our impromptu conversations on the sofa in my office or in a quiet corner at a work reception or other event - often in Brown Lounge. It is in those quiet spaces there that we shared the stories that really mattered --- stories about being a mom, a woman, a wife, handling the craziness that academic life can bring to your life if you let it, and her travels and work in the Motherland. She modeled work-life balance in my view -- and stories of her being a mom to her beautiful children is what I recall most fondly. I will be forever positively changed because I, like her many colleagues and students, are lucky to have shared space on this earth with her. I will deeply miss her smile, her spirit, her generosity, thoughtfulness, and mostly our "sofa convos" that turned her from a colleague to a true sister- friend. My deepest condolences go to those who knew her best -- her children and other family members. May each of you be comforted in the days, months, and years to come and may her memory be a daily blessing in your lives.

it is with great sorrow that I learn of Ms Carolyn Lesorogol's passing. Carolyn taught me at GWB during the 2007-2009 batch of MSW studentship. She taught us with passion, in detail and precision, using videos to get us to what she was driving at. She cannot ever be forgotten. May her family be comforted, and may she rest in peace.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today. I share in the sorrow of your loss. My friendship with Carolyn began in 1995 when we met on a trip to Ethiopia and bonded instantly. Over the years we brought our families together, in Nairobi and Mombasa, and I visited Carolyn in St Louis (2016) and with my husband in Kisima (2019). Carolyn and I have kept in close touch, especially during these past four years. Through Carolyn's messages I have learned of the growing family. It is to her girls, their spouses, and children, and to her father and siblings that we express our family's deepest condolences. My husband and I will make a contribution to your Samburu grandmother in Carolyn's memory.

I had the pleasure to know Carolyn both as a rascally ninth-grade member of the debate team and as a distinguished scholar, teacher and mentor. She leaves quite a legacy and was an amazing role model. She left us way too young, and will be greatly missed.
