Carolyn M. Mehorter, resident of Westfield, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and neighbor to many, died on November 19, 2025 at the age of 97, at Reformed Church Home, Old Bridge, NJ.
Born in Orange, NJ on January 17, 1928, she graduated in 1945 from Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ and continued on to study at Wheaton College, Wheaton IL. She fulfilled her lifelong dream by finishing her college degree when she graduated from Kean University, Union NJ in June, 1981. She was widowed since 1989, and also faced the loss of her eldest child, her daughter, Elizabeth M. Williams, in 2001, with the quiet strength that defined her.
She married Robert C. Mehorter of Maplewood, NJ after World War II (1948) and cherished the family they built with love and dedication. Her family was the center of her world that thrived on faith, generosity and close-knit bonds.
She gave generously of her time and care as a dedicated church volunteer, supporting youth activities and offering comfort to those in need. She found joy in gardening, reading, travel and the simple pleasures of summer days at the Jersey Shore. She was a remarkable cook and baker, known for her kindness and for the warm, inviting meals she shared with family and friends.
She leaves behind her beloved sister Ann Schuttenberg of North Olmsted, OH; and her four surviving children and their spouses, Robert (Meg), Peggy (Mel) Russell, John (Mary Rose), and Mary (Troy) Smith as well as 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought joy to her days.
Her parents preceded her in death, both in 1990, as did her brother Charlie, who passed away in 2016. Her daughter-in-law, Nancy Brooks Mehorter, passed away in 1991 as well as her grandson, Benjamin Andrew Russell in 2017. She drew strength from the memories of family, faith, and the beauty of the seasons.
The funeral service and burial to honor Carolyn and celebrate her life will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Reformed Church Home, 1990 Rt. 18N, Old Bridge, NJ 08857.
