Carrie Munson Obituary

Visit the Halvorson-Taylor Funeral and Cremation Care - Brainerd website to view the full obituary.

Carrie Anne Munson passed away at the age of 42 on August 2, 2025, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born on August 4, 1982, in Brainerd, MN, to Thomas Munson and Jerilynn Ackerman Munson, she left behind a legacy of love and tenacity.

Carrie is survived by her beloved partner, Sam Johnson; her cherished sons, Trey and Ty Nelson, and their father, Adam Nelson, as well as Sam’s children Luke, Lucy, and Nick; her father, Tom (with significant other Dale Mundell and granddaughter Raelynn); her mother, Jerilynn (with significant other Paul Schumacher); her paternal grandmother, Phyllis Munson (Brainerd, MN); and her siblings: Rachel Munson (New York Mills, MN), Jacob Munson (Apex, NC), Catherine Bridge (Pequot Lakes, MN), Sarah Harding (Zac, Minneapolis, MN) and Luke Munson (Brainerd, MN). She also leaves behind her nephews and nieces, Kira, Brynn, Zaeda, Kellan, Kylar, Koby, and Croix, as well as countless friends and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Norbert & Geraldine Ackerman, paternal grandfather Lewis Munson, and 2 maternal uncles, Tom Rohr and John Zientara.

Her boys were her world. She and Adam co-parented well, attending their sporting events and supporting them in every way possible. Their many vacations together created memories that will be cherished.

Carrie grew up in rural Pequot Lakes, and her precocious nature was evident early on. She graduated from Pine River High School in 2000 and went on to earn a degree in Accounting. Carrie participated in many school activities, sports and cheerleading, and maintained a close circle of friends throughout her life.

Though she rarely spoke of her Northwoods upbringing, she sometimes surprised colleagues with her knowledge of poultry, having competed in competitions through 4H, revealing a charming side of her farm life that many knew little about

Carrie worked at Miller’s on Main, then Kelly’s Korner Bar for several years, where she was known for her warm personality and strong work ethic. Later, at the North Star Law Group, she thrived in the supportive environment.

She will be remembered for her generosity, intelligence, empathy, dry sense of humor, beauty, confidence, love of fresh flowers and books, and so much more.

Those we love don’t go away

they walk beside us every day

unseen, unheard but always near

still loved, still missed and very dear
