Carroll Hinkle, Sr., age 88, of Blue Grass, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at his home.
He was born October 7, 1936 in the Hardscrabble community of Highland County, a son of the late George Ray and Mary (Warner) Hinkle.
On August 15, 1956, he married Ruby Grace Hamrick, who preceded him in death on January 30, 2011.
Carroll, or “Monk” as he was known, spent his working years as a laborer with various sawmills, including John’s sawmill in Blue Grass. He enjoyed time spent hunting, riding around and visiting with friends, as well as digging ramps in the mountains. Monk will be remembered as a simple man who knew no strangers, and well regarded for his work ethic within the community.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jodie Will; brothers, Bobby, Berlie, and Jason Hinkle; as well as sisters, Ruthleen Hinkle and Rosie Johnson.
Surviving family members include his daughters, Donna Wilson and husband, Michael of Blue Grass, and Elsie Champ of Petersburg, WV; his son, Carroll “Bill” Hinkle, Jr. of Blue Grass; brother, Dallie Hinkle and wife, Lois of Blue Grass; sister Wilma “Tootsie” Strawderman of Broadway; grandchildren, Justin Will, Tommy Champ, Wendy Weasenforth, and Julie Hinkle; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2025 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with Pastor William "Andy" Botkin officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Grass Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be his many friends in attendance.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 268, Monterey, Va. 24465.
